  • The Edinboro wrestling team gets the 2017-18 season underway with the Fighting Scot Duals. The action gets underway on Sunday, November 5 at McComb Fieldhouse at 10:30 a.m. with Bucknell and Cal State Bakersfield squaring off. At 12 noon, Edinboro takes to the mat for the first time, facing cal State Bakersfield. Then at 1:30 p.m., it's the Fighting Scots vs. Bucknell.
  • Edinboro is ranked 21st in InterMat's Dual Rankings and is 18th in the Tournament Rankings, along with 25th in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll. The Fighting Scots come off another highly-successful season, finishing with a 9-6 record in dual matches, including 6-0 in EWL contests. Edinboro went on to win its third EWL Championship in four years and finished 20th at the NCAA Division I National Championships.     
  • Head coach Tim Flynn has never been one to shy away from a tough opponent, and the veteran coach has put together another challenging schedule. Using the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll, the Fighting Scots will face five teams currently ranked in the Top 25. That includes third-ranked Oklahoma State, plus ninth-ranked Virginia Tech, and Lehigh, who is ranked tenth. Oklahoma is currently 19th in the rankings, and EWL rival Rider is 23rd. CSU Bakersfield is among "others receiving votes". In addition Edinboro will compete in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Midlands Invitational. 
  • The Fighting Scots return six national qualifiers from 2016-17, led by Sean Russell at 125 lbs. The redshirt junior finished seventh at 125 lbs. last year at Nationals to earn All-American honors for the first time. He is a two-time national qualifier. Austin Matthews is a three-time national qualifier, earning the honor a year ago at 165 lbs. Billy Miller is a two-time returning qualifier at heavyweight, with Korbin Myers (133 lbs.) and Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.) making it for the first time last year. In addition, Dakota Geer enjoyed an outstanding season at 184 lbs. while qualifying for Nationals. He was named the EWL Freshman of the Year. Geer is expected to redshirt this season.       
  • Six Fighting Scots, including Dakota Geer, are appearing in the various national rankings. Sean Russell leads the way. After going 37-8 a year ago, the redshirt junior is ranked sixth by InterMat and eighth by FloWrestling. Billy Miller, 32-11 last year, is ranked as high as 10th by InterMat and is 13th according to FloWrestling at heavyweight. Korbin Myers holds down the 11th spot in InterMat's rankings at 133 lbs. The redshirt sophomore was 30-12 in his first season in the lineup. At 165 lbs., senior Austin Matthews (20-9) is ranked 10th by InterMat. Ty Schoffstall was a first-time national qualifier in 2016-17, ending the year at 21-11. The redshirt senior is ranked 15th WIN Magazine. Geer is also ranked in several polls, but is redshirting. 
  • Cal State Bakersfield was 5-7 last year and 1-4 in the PAC 12 and is under second-year head coach Manny Rivera. The Roadrunners actually opened up the 2017-18 season on Thursday night at Buffalo, posting a 22-14 victory over the Bulls. CSU Bakersfield is led by redshirt senior Matt Williams at 197 lbs. Williams is ranked 11th by both InterMat and FloWrestling after going 20-11 last year and qualifying for Nationals. He won a 7-1 decision in overtime in his opening bout on Thursday. Russell Rohlfing is also ranked at 141 lbs. The redshirt sophomore qualified for Nationals last year and ended the year with a 23-13 record. He is ranked 17th by FloWrestling and 19th by InterMat. National qualifier Lorenzo De La Riva is ranked 15th by InterMat and 18th by FlooWrestling at 165 lbs. after going 19-13 a year ago. Thursday's win at UB was spurred by an 11-4 upset win for Sergio Mendez over 14th-ranked Kyle Akins at 125 lbs.    
  • Bucknell was 12-4 last year and 9-1 in the EIWA. Former Bloomsburg head coach Dan Wirnsberger is in his 13th season as the head coach of the Bison. Bucknell's lineup also features a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in three-time national qualifiers Tyler Smith and Tom Sleigh. Smith (31-10 in '16-17) is ranked ninth by both InterMat and FloWrestling at 141 lbs. Sleigh begins the year ranked 14th by InterMat and 15th by FloWrestling at 197 lbs. He was 31-7 last year. The Bison lineup includes former Reynolds standout Seth Hogue (9-19), the anticipated starter at 149 lbs.
  • The Bucknell staff includes former Edinboro standout Jim Gibson, who graduated from Edinboro in 2007 and had previously coached at Clarion.
  • Edinboro head coach comes in to his 21st season with a 215-90-5 record. He holds the career record for victories at Edinboro and was inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame in October..
  • The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, November 11, competing in the EMU Open.

HEAD COACH

EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 21st season as the helm of the Fighting Scots.  He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 215-90-5 record.  Edinboro has had 14 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure.  That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing three years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 38 All-Americans.  All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 14 times. Four years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson. Flynn was inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame in October.
