Fighting Scots Open Season with Impressive Wins over Cal State Bakersfield, Bucknell

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling teams opened the 2017-18 campaign in impressive fashion on Sunday, hosting the Fighting Scot Duals with Bucknell and Cal State Bakersfield. Head coach Tim Flynn's 21st season began with a pair of impressive wins, as the 25th-ranked Fighting Scots defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 34-9, then handed Bucknell a 30-10 defeat. The day began with CSU Bakersfield winning 26-10 over Bucknell.
 
Eight of the ten Edinboro wrestlers picked up a pair of wins, with Fritz Hoehn posting the biggest of the day. The redshirt sophomore, competing at 165 lbs., won by fall over #15 Lorenzo DeLa Riva of Cal State Bakersfield in his opening match, followed by a technical fall vs. Bucknell. Billy Miller, meanwhile opened his redshirt junior season with a pair of falls at heavyweight.
 
EDINBORO 34, CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 9
The Fighting Scots won eight of ten bouts, picking up bonus points in five matches. Sean Russell, ranked sixth at 125 lbs., opened up with a 20-4 technical fall at 6:00 over Sergio Mendez, recording six takedowns along the way. Freshman Peter Pappas was impressive in his first collegiate match with 16-4 major decision at 149 lbs. over Kalani Tonge. Fritz Hoehn knotted his match with 15th-ranked Lorenzo De La Riva at 4-4 with a takedown, and twenty seconds latter finished the pin at 2:39.  Ty Schoffstall won by major decision at 174 lbs. with a 15-4 win over Bryan Battisto. Billy Miller, ranked tenth at heavyweight, wrapped up the win with a fall at 4:47 over Jarrod Snyder. Edinboro had 27 takedowns and Cal State Bakersfield five.
 
EDINBORO 30, BUCKNELL 10
The Fighting Scots once again won eight matches, with three by bonus points. Miller made it two-for-two with falls with a second period pin of Eric Chakonis at 4:34. Hoehn finished his big day with a technical fall over Joey Schiele by a score of 16-0 at 4:48. Andrew Shomers won by major decision over Mitch Hartman, 12-0. Edinboro finished with 24 takedowns compared to eight for Bucknell.
