Liggins, Bench Lead Edinboro to Seventh Win, 93-73 over Charleston(WV)

EDINBORO, Pa. – Keshawn Liggins posted his third 30-point effort of the season and the bench played a key role as the Edinboro men's basketball team posted a 93-73 win over Charleston(WV) at McComb Fieldhouse on Monday afternoon. The non-conference victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 7-2 overall, just one win shy of last year's total of eight wins. The Golden Eagles, members of the Mountain East Conference, dropped to 8-4 with the loss. The 93 points was a season high.

Liggins, a 6'5" senior in his first season as a Fighting Scot after transferring from Idaho State, dropped in a season-high 38 points while playing an all-around outstanding. He would fall short of his seventh straight double-double, but still finished with seven rebounds and six assists. He made 14-of-21 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and was 7-of-8 at the line.

Keshawn Liggins had career-high 39 points.
The Fighting Scots got great production from the bench, offsetting subpar shooting days from Anthony Coleman and Jaymon Mason. Alex Jay played 23 minutes and contributed a season-high 13 points. The 6'3" freshman made 5-of-8 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers. He added five assists. Fellow freshman Jaryn Simpson contributed 10 points with five assists, making 4-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers.

Edinboro once again received great production from the pivot, as Jack Frank started and finished with six points and a game-high nine rebounds. Trey Staunch, still hardly a month removed from playing offensive tackle for the football team, came off the bench and totaled a season-high 12 points. He made 4-of-7 field goals and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.

The contest was expected to be a tight affair, and was for the first six minutes. A 17-0 run gave the Fighting Scots a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish. Tied at 6-6 with 14:37 to play in the first half, Edinboro held Charleston scoreless for the next four minutes as five different players contributed to the 17-point run. Mike Beck led the way as he scored all six of his points in the burst on a tradition 3-point play and a 3-pointer from the corner.

The Golden Eagles closed the gap to ten points on two occasions, the last at 35-25 with 3:48 remaining, but Edinboro closed the half on an 11-3 run to go up 46-28 at intermission. The Fighting Scots limited UC to 39.1 percent shooting in the first half.

With leading scorer Kier Anderson leading the way, the Golden Eagles opened the second half on 11-3 run of their own to once again pull to within ten at 49-39 less than four minutes into the half.

Yet another 11-3 run, this one courtesy of the Fighting Scots, boosted the margin back up to 18 points at 60-42, and UC never pulled closer than 14 points the rest of the game. A 24-6 run over the next six minutes gave Edinboro its largest lead of the game at 84-55 with 6:23 remaining.

Edinboro shot 50.7 percent from the floor (34-of-67), including 9-of-26 on 3-pointers, and went 16-of-18 at the line. Charleston ended the game at 46.4 percent (26-of-56), making 5-of-16 3-pointers and 16-of-25 free throws. Edinboro ruled the boards, 38-31, and committed just nine turnovers compared to 13 for the Golden Eagles.
