Edinboro Rally Comes Up Short in 79-63 Loss to IUP

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team suffered their third loss in the last four games on Saturday afternoon as Indiana(Pa.) handed the Fighting Scots a 79-63 defeat at McComb Fieldhouse. An Edinboro team with several players at less than 100 percent fell to 18-6 overall and 14-4 in the PSAC West. IUP, winners of six games in a row, is now 18-5 and 16-3, respectively. The contest was part of Edinboro's Make-A-Wish Day, and televised nationally by the American Sports Network.

For the second game in a row, the Fighting Scots found themselves behind early, only to make a spirited comeback. The Crimson Hawks scored the first eight points of the game and led 21-12 after one period. The margin remained nine points at 37-28 at the half, thanks to a 7-1 run for the Fighting Scots to close out the half.
In the first twenty minutes, IUP shot a sizzling 58.6 percent from the floor (17-of-29), while Edinboro made just 11-of-35 shots (31.4 pct.).

The Crimson Hawks would open up a 58-45 lead after three quarters. That's when Edinboro began its rally. Trailing 63-51 with 7:12 to play, Edinboro scored seven straight points to pull to within five points at 63-58 with just over five minutes to play. Michaela Barnes opened the run with a layup, followed by a Katie Fischer 3-pointer. Ciara Rosten capped it with a layup following an IUP turnover.

IUP answered with a 3-pointer by Lauren Wolosik, but another Rosten layup once again pulled the Scots close at 66-60 with 3:36 remaining. Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots saw the Crimson Hawks run off the next nine points in a two-and-a-half minute span to take a commanding 75-60 lead. The daggers were a pair of 3-pointers, one by Megan Smith and the other by Carolyn Appleby. Edinboro, meanwhile, would make just one basket the rest of the game, that a Maggie Moore jumper with eight seconds to play.
