Edinboro Overcomes 18-Point Second-Half Deficit, Shocks Gannon, 78-77, to Stay in Playoff Picture

ERIE, Pa. (February 15, 2017) – Adversity has been something that the Edinboro University men's basketball team has come to expect by this point in their season. But Wednesday night proved to be a testament to the Fighting Scots' resiliency when they walked into Hammermill Center to face Gannon. Facing an 18-point, second-half deficit, with another defeat possibly ending their playoff hopes, the Fighting Scots led a furious comeback, culminating in a game-winning jumper by Jaymon Mason with 20 seconds remaining, to stun the Golden Knights, 78-77.

Edinboro, who played with just seven players due to injuries for the fifth time in the last six games, scored the last six points of the contest and even survived a late scare with one second to play when Gannon's Evan Phoenix failed to convert on the front end of a one-and-one. The Fighting Scots snapped a five-game losing streak to jump to 7-16 overall and 5-14 in the PSAC West. The victory not only evened the season series with Gannon, who dropped to 16-8 and 14-6 respectively, but kept the Boro's slim hopes alive in the PSAC Tournament picture. The Golden Knights won the first meeting, 80-69, at McComb Fieldhouse on January 11.

Edinboro trailed Gannon, 42-26, at halftime, and faced its largest deficit of the contest at 44-26 when Phoenix opened the second half with a jumper with 19:41 to play. Mason, after being held to just two points in the first half and not making a basket until 1:12 left in the opening period, exploded for 24 second-half points to help lead the charge for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots' efforts, which saw them shoot 57.6 percent in the second half and 7-for-12 from 3-point range, eventually tied the game at 72-72 with 2:49 to go.

Gannon ran off the next five points, all from Matthew Dogan, to retake the lead, 77-72, with 1:47 remaining. Andre Frederick and Sheldon Brogdon each scored on layups to draw Edinboro to within one at 77-76 with 49 seconds remaining. After a missed layup by Dogan with 40 ticks left, Mason drilled the long jumper, which was initially mistaken as a 3-pointer, with 20 seconds to play to take a 78-77 lead. Following a full Gannon timeout, Phoenix was fouled by Mikael Anderson with one second to play, giving him a one-and-one opportunity. But the front end of Phoenix' chance hit high off the back rim, with Frederick coming up with the rebound to seal the incredible win.

As of Wednesday night, the Scots are three games behind in the playoff hunt with three games remaining. Three spots are still up for grabs in the PSAC West, with Indiana (Pa.) and Gannon having clinched the first and second seeds, respectively, while Pitt-Johnstown secured a tournament spot Wednesday evening. Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock, Seton Hill and California (Pa.) are among the contenders for the final three slots.

Edinboro finished the contest at 50.0 percent (30-for-60), including 10-for-21 from 3-point range and 8-for-11 from the free throw line. Gannon shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59), making 6-of-17 3-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws. The Fighting Scots forced the Golden Knights into 14 turnovers for 20 points off turnovers, while they turned the ball over just six times and once in the second half. Edinboro led, 18-0, in bench points, while Gannon held a 39-24 lead in rebounds.

Mason finished tied with Dogan for a game-high 26 points, and tallied seven assists, five rebounds and five steals. The 6'3" guard moved into sixth all-time on the Edinboro career scoring list with 1,471 points, while moving into 14th place on the season scoring list with 531 points.

Damon Miraud tallied a double-double for Gannon with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Phoenix had 18 points with eight rebounds, while Zay Jackson finished with 11 markers.

Head coach Pat Cleary was again dealt with the task of suiting up just seven players due to a series of injuries. While Anderson's recent return from an injury brought Edinboro's healthy roster up to eight, senior guard Chibunna Ukandu missed Wednesday's contest due to illness.

Despite Edinboro having seven players score in the first half to Gannon's five, the Golden Knights benefited from a pair of double-digit scorers to stay ahead comfortably in the first 20 minutes. The Fighting Scots shot 40.7 percent in the first half (11-for-27), while the Golden Knights made 58.1 percent (18-for-31). Mike Beck, Brogdon and Anderson each collected five points to lead the Boro at the half. Mason contributed with three steals, three assists and two rebounds. Miraud shot 7-for-8 in the first half on his way to 16 first-half points for Gannon, while collecting seven boards. Phoenix tallied 10 points with five rebounds. Jackson also weighed in with nine points, including a 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, February 18, when they head to Mercyhurst to take on the Lakers at 3:00 p.m.
