Fighting Scots Suffer Heartbreaking 61-56 Defeat to Seton Hill

EDINBORO, Pa. – With a victory nearly at hand, the Edinboro men's basketball saw it snatched away by Seton Hill on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Griffins made six free throws in the 15 final seconds to hand Edinboro a painful 61-56 defeat in a PSAC West contest. The Fighting Scots are now 6-15 overall and 4-13 in the PSAC action, while Seton Hill improved to 11-11 and 8-10, respectively.

Once again suiting up just seven players, the Fighting Scots turned in a strong defensive effort against a Seton Hill team that had scored 104 points against them in the first meeting. Edinboro would jump out to a 32-20 lead at the half, holding the Griffins to just 30.0 percent from the floor (9-of-30).

The Fighting Scots would build the lead to 48-31 with 12:51 remaining on one of Sheldon Brogdon's fifth 3-pointer of the night. Unfortunately, Edinboro would make just two more baskets the rest of the night, a layup and 3-pointer by Brogdon. They would miss their final nine shots of the night while going without a basket from the 8:39 mark.

Mike Beck finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
At that point, Edinboro still led 53-41. The Griffins would score the next nine points to pull to within three at 53-50 with 2:40 remaining. Maceo Baston would make one-of-two free throws with 2:04 remaining – Edinboro's first free throws attempted on the evening – but Manny Joshua's jumper cut the lead to two at 54-52 with 1:41 left. Baston went back to the line and made a pair for a 56-52 lead with 1:12 remaining, but it would be the final points of the night for the Scots.

Seton Hill closed the game with a 9-0 run, thanks in part to a couple damaging calls at the end. Noah Davis' layup and free throw made it 56-55 with 50 ticks showing. Edinboro came up empty on its next possession, and the Griffins took their first lead since midway through the first half at 57-56 when Davis made two more free throws with 15 seconds on the clock.

Brogdon was fouled with 2.8 seconds to play, but the senior guard missed the front end of a one-and-one. The ensuing scramble for the rebound was ruled out of bounds off an Edinboro player, and the Edinboro bench was then assessed a technical. Zach Herman sank a pair of free throws, and with 0.1 showing, Damjan Sredanovic made a pair at the charity stripe to make it six free throws in the final 15 seconds.

Brogdon ended the night as the game's leading scorer with 21 points, making 5-of-12 3-pointers. Baston scored in double figures for the third time in four games with 13 points, while Mike Beck finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, adding five steals. Jon Girvin pulled down 11 rebounds as Edinboro won the battle of the boards, 37-33.

Jaymon Mason, who came in as the PSAC's leading scorer and ranked eighth in Division II, was limited to eight points on 3-of-15 shooting. The redshirt junior guard did hand out a season-high nine assists and pulled down five rebounds. He played all 40 minutes for the tenth straight game.

Davis was the only Seton Hill player to score in double figures, as head coach Tony Morocco made liberal use of his bench. Davis finished with 11 points, while Spencer Casson had nine points and five blocks, and Joshua finished with nine points.

Edinboro finished the night shooting 37.3 percent (22-of-59), while a hot-shooting second half (58.3 pct.) boosted Seton Hill to 42.6 percent (23-of-54). Edinboro made 9-of-28 3-pointers, while the Griffins were 4-for-12. Neither team saw much time at the free throw line, with Seton Hill showing an 11-for-14 chart, and Edinboro just 3-of-5.

The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday, hosting fourth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) in a 3 p.m. tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Crimson Hawks will come in riding a 13-game winning streak.
