Fighting Scots Snap Losing Streak with 9-8 Win at Roberts Wesleyan as Peters Ties Record for Career Goals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Second-year head coach Caitlin Formato had some anxious moments, but when it was all said and done the Edinboro women's lacrosse ended a ten-match losing streak with a 9-8 win at Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday. The victory, the first for the Fighting Scots since March 11, boosted Edinboro to 2-11, while Roberts Wesleyan is now 6-10.

Edinboro jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead with four straight goals to end the half. That lead grew to 8-3 when the two teams exchanged goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. Four minutes later, the xx scored to make it 8-4. That would start a run of three straight goals over the next five minutes as Roberts Wesleyan closed the gap to 8-6.

Freshman Olivia Potts scored a goal with 8:40 remaining to give the Fighting Scots a 9-6 lead. It proved to be more than just as an insurance goal, as the Redhawks scored two more times to close the gap to 9-8 with 25 seconds left. Meghan Burnham scored on a free position goal with 3:47 to play, and the Redhawks made it a one goal match on a free position goal by Emily Knight with just 25 seconds remaining.

Roberts Wesleyan came up with the ensuing draw control, and called a timeout with 15 seconds left. The Redhawks would get a shot off in the closing seconds, but it was deflected by Potts.

Emily Peters led Edinboro with three goals. In the process, the senior tied the career record for goals with 124. Shannon Rohrich also has 124 career goals.
The real story on the afternoon was an outstanding performance by the defense and goalkeeper Paige Skinner. Roberts Wesleyan's Cassley Jackowski came in leading Division II in goals (77) and points (107), but was limited to just three goals and an assist in 13 shots.

Roberts Wesleyan held a 31-19 advantage in shots, but as usual, Skinner was up to the task. The junior registered 12 saves.

The contest got off to a slow start, with the score tied at 1-1 with just over 17 minutes gone in the first half. Edinboro grabbed the lead for good at 2-1 when Kasey Thur scored, assisted by Rachel Olson. The teams would exchange goals over the next four minutes to make it 3-2 with 8:29 remaining.

Edinboro ended the half with four straight goals, the first three on free position shots by Elysia Garland, Peters, and Olson. Peters scored her second goal of the match, assisted by Potts, with 53 seconds to play for a 7-2 lead.

In addition to Peters, Olson had two goals and an assist, with Potts adding a goal and an assist. Mary Uplinger, Garland and Thur scored a goal apiece.

???????Edinboro will now play the middle game of a three-game week on Thursday, April 20 at Indiana(Pa.). The Crimson Hawks are currently ranked 19th in the latest IWLCA Division II poll.
