Coleman's Career-High 32 Not Enough in 83-69 Loss at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – Anthony Coleman scored a career-high 32 points thanks to an incredible shooting performance, but it came in a losing effort as Edinboro suffered an 83-69 loss at Gannon on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots dropped to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the PSAC, while the Golden Knights are now 10-5 and 6-3, respectively, while winning their sixth straight game.

Gannon dominated action in the first half while bolting to a 47-29 lead. Edinboro grabbed a 7-6 lead early in the contest thanks to a Coleman jumper in the paint, but the Golden Knights responded with the next 14 points to take the lead for good while making six-of-seven shots. Gannon added a 22-9 run late in the half to go up by 20 at 47-27 before a pair of Jaryn Simpson free throws ended the first=half scoring.

Over the first 20 minutes, Gannon shot 52.6 percent (20-of-38), committed just two turnovers, and owned a 25-17 advantage on the glass. Edinboro, meanwhile, struggled against the top defensive team and second-best rebounding squad in the PSAC. The Fighting Scots made just 9-of-30 shots (30.0 percent), including 4-of-15 on 3-pointers.

Gannon built its lead to as much as 31 points at 71-40 and still led 73-43 with just over ten minutes to play when the Fighting Scots came alive and made things interesting down the stretch. Over the next five minutes, Edinboro scored the next 19 points to cut the gap to 73-62 with 5:31 to play.

Coleman did most of the damage, scoring 14 points, with freshman Alex Jay accounting for the other five points. Coleman started the run with a jumper in the paint, followed by a Jay 3-pointer. Coleman scored the next 12 points on three long 3-pointers, plus three free throws when he was fouled on a three. When Jay tipped in his own miss, the Fighting Scots were within 11.

Unfortunately, Gannon built the lead back up to 15 points at 77-62. Edinboro would close to within 10 at 79-69 with 2:13 to play on Trey Staunch's layup, but the Scots would not score again as Gannon closed out the win with four straight free throws.

Edinboro's comeback brought back memories of last year's meeting at the Hammermill Center, when the Fighting Scots rallied from 18 points down to win 78-77.
Coleman, a junior college transfer in his first season at Edinboro, was impressive in his first meeting with the Gannon. He made 11-of-20 shots, including 7-of-12 3-pointers, and was 3-for-3 at the line. He scored 21 of his points in the second half, when he made 4-of-5 3-pointers. Many of his three's were from well beyond the 3-point arc. It is his second 30-point game of the season and ninth by a Fighting Scot. Keshawn Liggins has five and Jaymon Mason two.

Coleman was the lone Fighting Scot to reach double digits. Liggins, who came in as the PSAC's leading scorer at 24.0 ppg., was held to a season-low seven points. Mason, Edinboro's second all-time leading scorer, was limited to nine points.

Jay and Staunch provided a boost off the bench, each scoring eight points. Jay made 3-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 3-pointers, and had four assists in 21 minutes. Staunch, better known for his exploits on the gridiron, made 2-of-3 field goals and was 4-for-4 at the line.

Gannon showcased a pair of 20-point scorers who gave the Fighting Scots fits all night, as Zay Jackson had 24 points and Jair Green 21. The duo combined to make 18-of-33 shots. Jackson had 17 and Green 14 in the first half. Evan Phoenix added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Gannon shot 50.0 percent for the game (33-of-66), with 5-of-15 3-pointers, and 12-of-17 free throws. Edinboro ended the night at 39.0 percent (23-of-59), making 11-of-29 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots were 12-of-14 at the line. Gannon, the second-best rebounding team in the PSAC, held a 44-29 rebounding advantage, with 15 on the offensive glass. Edinboro committed six turnovers and Gannon eight. Gannon held a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint.

The going doesn't get any easier for the Fighting Scots, as they plat for the fifth time in 11 days, hosting Indiana(Pa.) on Saturday, January 13. The Crimson Hawks were the preseason favorite in the PSAC West.
