Speed Leads Boro to Win Over Illinois as Fighting Scots Split Pair of Contests in CID Tournament

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team earned a split of its two games on Saturday in day two of the CID Tournament at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots handed Illinois a 49-41 defeat in its opening contest before falling to Cleveland in game number two, 47-37. The win over Illinois marked the first for the Scots in almost ten years. Edinboro is now 11-12 overall.

One day after suffering a tough 44-41 loss to Illinois, the Fighting Scots never trailed in the game while riding a strong first half to a split in the two weekend games. Edinboro had three players score in double figures, led by Will Speed's 14 markers. Speed made 7-of-9 shots, adding six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Kevin Atherley added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Ayubi Alli contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Chayse Wolfe added seven rebounds and five assists. Spencer Heslop led the Illini with 19 points and 14 boards. Edinboro would jump out to a 23-14 lead at the half, holding Illinois to 37.5 percent shooting and forcing eight turnovers. A 10-1 run would give the Fighting Scots a 19-9 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half. The Fighting Scots opened the second half with a 16-10 run to grabs their biggest lead of the game at 39-24 with 11:16 to play on a basket and free throw by Atherley. The Illini would make things interesting over the final seven minutes, scoring seven straight points to pull to within six at 41-35 with 5:48 to play. That was as close as Illinois would get, and Speed sealed the win with a bucket with 2:16 to go to make it 49-40. Edinboro shot 46.9 percent for the game (23-of-49, but once again struggled the line, making just 2-of-16 free throws. Illinois ended the day at 39.0 percent from the floor (16-of-41), and was 7-of-12 from the charity stripe. The rebound battle was even at 31-31. Edinboro committed just eight turnovers compared to 15 for Illinois.

A cold-shooting first half spelled defeat for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro made just 5-of-28 shots (17.9 pct.) as the Cavaliers jumped out to a 22-10 lead after 20 minutes. The Scots would use a 16-2 run to wipe out a 12-point deficit and take a 32-30 lead with 8:27 remaining. Chayse Wolf got the run rolling with a basket, followed by another hoop by Kevin Atherley. After a Cleveland basket made it 30-20, Edinboro would score the next 12 points on layups by Wolfe, Alli, Atherley, and Wolfe again. Speed's jumper tied the contest at 30-30, and Alex Saleh gave Edinboro a 32-30 lead with a basket. Unfortunately, in between the last two baskets, Wolf picked up his fifth foul. Cleveland would break a 34-34 tie with four straight points as they outscored Edinboro 13-3 over the last six minutes. Speed and Atherley led Edinboro with nine points apiece, with Atherley pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Wolf had eight points and five assists. Will Waller led Claveland with 19 points and 12 boards. Edinboro would warm up in the second half, making 12-of-24 shots to finish the game at 32.7 percent (17-of-52). They would make 3-of-7 free throws. Cleveland shot 45.5 percent from the floor (20-of-44) and was 6-of-11 at the line. The Cavaliers held a 34-30 advantage in rebounds. Edinboro committed 11 turnovers and Cleveland 15.
