Offense Comes Alive as Edinboro Snaps Five-Game Losing Streak with 3-0 Win over Clarion

  • The Short Story: Edinboro scored a a season-high three goals, two in the first seven minutes, to snap a five-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Clarion. The Fighting Scots remained undefeated all-time against the Golden Eagles as Rebecca Manns, Brittnie Spitahaler, and Sidney Dobbins scored a goal apiece. Freshman Anna Voelker recorded her second shutout in goal.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and was able to dominate the action. Rebecca Manns gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead just 5 minutes, 38 seconds into the match with her second goal of the season. Manns beat Clarion goalkeeper Krista Mosi from nine yards out in front of the net off a feed from Halle Hammer following a throw in.
  • The Fighting Scots scored less than two minutes later at 7:04 to go up 2-0. Freshman Brittnie Spithaler picked up her second goal of the season as she fired a long shot from 30 yards out over Mosi into the back of the net.
  • After leading 2-0 at the half, Edinboro would tack on an insurance goal at 66:49 as Sidney Dobbins contributed her first goal of the season, assisted by Manns. Manns' shot was deflected by Mosi and rebounded back to Dobbins, who fired the ball into the net from 10 yards out for a 3-0 lead.
GAME NOTES  
  • Edinboro dominated in shots with a 27-9 advantage. They held a 13-4 edge in the first half, then outshot the Golden Eagles 14-5 over the final 45 minutes. Edinboro held a 9-3 edge in shots on goal and had 7 corner kicks to 4 for Clarion.  
  • Edinboro goalkeeper Anna Voelker posted her second shutout of the season. The freshman had 3 saves in goal, while Clarion's Krista Mosi had 6 saves.
  • The Fighting Scots had lost five straight matches coming into the match, while facing some of the top teams in the PSAC in Millersville, Slippery Rock, Kutztown, and West Chester. 
  • The Fighting Scots were playing their second match in a three-match homestand after playing four straight contests on the road. 
  • After being shut out in three of the last four matches, Edinboro scored a season high three goals. The Fighting Scots had previously scored a pair of goals against Shippensburg and California(Pa.). 
  • Both Edinboro and Clarion have struggled to score this year, with the Fighting Scots entering the match with nine goals and Clarion with six. The Golden Eagles were shut out for the third straight contest.
  • Edinboro now holds a 20-0-4 lead in the all-time series with Clarion. A year ago, the two teams tied in two overtimes, 1-1. 
UP NEXT
  • Edinboro has a break, not returning to the field until Friday, October 12. The Fighting Scots Indiana(Pa.) at Sox Harrison Stadium, with the match getting underway at 2:00 p.m.
  • The Crimson Hawks are currently 5-4-1 and 3-4-1 in the PSAC.
  • IUP has won the last two meetings against Edinboro, including a 4-1 decision a year ago.
