Edinboro Suffers Heartbreakling Loss in Overtime to 21st-Ranked Kutztown, 33-32

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  #21 Kutztown 33, Edinboro 32
  • Records:  Edinboro (6-5), Kutztown (9-1)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. -- Sox Harrison Stadium
  • The Short Story:  Successful extra points were at a premium all day, but when it mattered the most, Kutztown's Alec Rosenfeld was true, providing the 21st-ranked Golden Bears with a 33-32 overtime win. Both teams battled horrific conditions, as Sox Harrison Stadium was battered by intermittent heavy snow and strong winds throughout the game.  Trailing 26-19, Edinboro would tie the game on a 12-yard pass from Andrew Tomko to Ta'Nauz Gregory with 1:41 remaining. Kutztown would drive to the Edinboro 33 but regulation ended in a 26-26 tie. The Fighting Scots took the lead on a leaping 10-yard TD catch by Gregory from Tomko, but Jake Monroe's PAT attempt hit the right upright. Kutztown answered with an eight-yard scoring run by Collin DiGalbo, and Rosenfeld, who had missed two earlier, booted the game-winner.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Conditions were hardly conducive to throwing the football, but both teams put together impressive drives to start the game. Edinboro drove 75 yards on 14 plays behind Walter Fletcher and Jarrod Kellar. Fletcher carried six times for 35 yards. Kellar completed seven passes in eight attempts. Facing a 4th-and-goal from the KU 4, Kellar lefted a pass to the left corner of the end zone to redshirt freshman tight end A.J. Turner for a 7-0 lead with 10:31 left in the first quarter following Monroe's conversion.
  • Kutztown responded with a 10-play, 68-yard drive that was all Collin DiGalbo and Craig Reynolds. A 26-yard pass from DiGalbo to Jack Pilkerton gave the Golden Bears a 1st-and-goal at the six, and on the next play Reynolds burts up the middle for a touchdown. Connor Kelly blocked Rosenfeld's extra point attempt for a 7-6 score with 5:53 to play in the first quarter.
  • Edinboro's next possession resulted in disaster for Kellar, whose third-down pass was intercepted and returned 29 yards for a touchdown by Ahkee Cox-Cowan with 4:29 left in the quarter. Rosenfeld's PAT was no good for a 12-7 lead.
  • As the weather and field conditions worsened, neither team scored the rest of the way, although Edinboro had a 40-yard TD pass to Gregory called back by an offsetting penalty late in the first quarter. The Edinboro defense, meanwhile, came up big twice in the second quarter, Kutztown was stopped on downs at the Edinboro 20 and 15 following drives of 13 and 17 plays, respectively. It was even more impressive since the Fighting Scots were without two starters on defense and lost several others throughout the course of the game.
  • Edinboro would grab the lead at 13-12 on Kutztown's opening possession of the third quarter when Brandan Rivers, one of 17 seniors recognized prior to the game on Senior Day, stepped in front of a DiGalbo pass and returned the interception 85 yards for a touchdown. DeAndre' Dowdell provided heavy pressure on a blitz. It was first interception of the outside linebacker's career. Monroe's extra point attempt hit the right upright.
  • The lead did not last for long, as Kutztown drove 68 yards on 11 plays, covering 5 minutes,32 seconds. DeiGalbo capped the drive with an eight-yard run on an option to the left, going into nthe end zone untouched. The two-point pass attempt failed, leaving Kutztown ahead, 18-13, with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Edinboro would fumble the ensuing kickoff, and the Golden Bears appeared primed to boost their lead with the ball at the EU 30. The Edinboro defense again stepped up, with Zuril Hendrick providing a record-setting moment. The senior cornerback made a diving interception in front of the Edinboro bench at the 23. It was his 21st career interception, breaking the school record of 20 previously set by Chris Avery.
  • Another Kutztown miscue early in the fourth quarter led to Edinboro's first lead since the fourth quarter. Facing 4th-and-7 at the KU 33, a bad snap on a punt sailed well over punter Dean Krcic's head. Krcic caught up with the ball at his own two and kicked it out of the end zone. Edinboro was awarded the ball at the KU 1 following the penalty for the illegal kick. Fletcher scored on a run up the middle on the next play with 10:48 left. His run for two points would fail, leaving the Scots holding a 19-18 lead.
  • Kutztown needed eight plays to regain the lead, going 69 yards in 2 minutes, 36 seconds. DiGalbo completed 4-of-6 passes for 60 yards in the drive, the last covering 18 yards to Conor Sullivan with 8:06 left in the game. DiGalbo then completed a pass to Tyler Borg for the 2-point conversion and a 26-19 lead.
  • For the second week in a row, Edinboro put together an impressive late drive against a nationally-ranked team, only to come up short. Fueled by a 55-yard pass from Andrew Tomko to Turner on a 3rd-and-6, the Scots were at the KU 9 with less than six minutes to play. Four plays netted one yard and the Scots turned the ball over on downs.
  • The Edinboro defesne forced a three-and-out, and the Scots took over at the KU 48 with 2:51 to play. Tomko immediately went to the air and found Andre Dowdell for 41 yards to the seven. Three plays later found the Scots facing a 4th-and-goal at the 12. Tomko fired a pass to Gregory on a short post, and the junior wide receiver need a nice catch on a ball that was behind him, hauling it in for a 12-yard TD with 1:41 to play. Head coach Wayne Bradford originally went for two, but a penalty pushed the Scots back five yards and Monroe's extra point knotted the score at 26-26.
  • Kutztown nearly pulled off the win in regulation, driving from its won 25 to the Edinboro 33. On 3rd-and-10 with 18 seconds to play, Derek Dorr and Trey Hall sacked DiGalbo for a loss of 11 yards. His fourth down pass fell incomplete and the two teams headed to overtime.
  • Kutztown won the toss in overtime, with Edinboro taking the ball and needing just four plays to cover the 25 yards. Fletcher carried three times down to the ten, and the Tomko-to-Gregory connection struck again, this time with Gregory making a leaping catch in the back left corner of the end zone. When Monroe's PAT attempt hit the right upright, Edinboro led 32-26.
  • Kutztown stated at Edinboro's 25 and needed four plays, all featuring DiGalbo, to win the game. After an incompletion, he threw 17 yards to Diego Torres to the eight. Following another incompletion,.DiGalbo wnet back to pass, then ran up the middle to tie the game on an 8-yard TD run. Rosenfeld's extra point was good, sending the Kutztown players into a frenzy.
