WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team concluded play at the Wisconsin Whitewater Tournament on Saturday with a 52-47 loss in the morning to Alabama, before defeating Nebraska-Omaha in the afternoon contest, 62-46. The Fighting Scots posted a 2-2 mark in the two-day tournament, following a win over Southwest Minnesota State and loss to Wisconsin Whitewater.
Edinboro will rest up and prepare for back-to-back road contests at Washington D.C. on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16.
ALABAMA 52, EDINBORO 47
Edinboro ended the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (12-of-24) in the second half. The Fighting Scots made 1-of-5 3-pointers and missed their lone free throw attempt. Alabama converted 22-of-43 shots (51.2 percent), went 0-for-2 from behind the arc, and 4-of-7 at the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots edged the Crimson Tide 17-12 in assists. Both teams grabbed 23 rebounds.
The Fighting Scots went into halftime down by a point at 24-23. Just 34 seconds into the second half, Jacob Spillers gave Edinboro the lead at 25-24 on a jumper. But the Crimson Tide responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes. With 7:02 remaining in the game and Edinboro trailing 45-33, the Fighting Scots scored 10 of the next 14 points over a four-minute stretch. That trimmed the deficit to six points at 49-43. Chayse Wolf converted a jumper with 54 seconds remaining, which cut the Crimson Tide's lead to four. Following an Alabama turnover, Spillers laid in a basket to put Edinboro within a two at 49-47. However, Alabama would convert 3-of-4 free throws in the final 38 seconds to secure the win.
Kevin Atherley led the Scots with 16 points on 8-of-19 shooting and had three steals. Wolf added nine points, dished out a game-high eight assists, collected a team-best seven rebounds and recorded three steals.
EDINBORO 62, NEBRASKA-OMAHA 46
Kevin Atherley led all players with 16 points and 11 rebounds to help the Fighting Scots pick up their second win of the tournament. The senior, who shot 8-of-12 from the floor, recorded his fifth double-double of the season. He was joined by Chayse Wolf, Alex Saleh, and Jacob Spillers to score in double-digits. Wolf contributed 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting and collected seven boards, including three on the offensive end. Saleh and Spillers both provided an offensive attack off the bench. Saleh shot 6-of-9 for 12 points, while Spillers went 5-of-11 for 10 points. Spillers also dished out a team-high six assists.
The Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest, leading by as much as 21 points in the second half. They connected on 52.5 percent (31-of-59) of their shots, went 0-for-4 on 3-pointers and did not attempt a free throw. The Scots held Nebraska-Omaha to a 39.6 percent clip (21-of-53), including 7-of-27 shooting overall in the first half. The Mavericks went 2-of-6 behind the arc and 2-of-5 at the line. Edinboro had the advantage on the glass, as they outrebounded the Mavericks, 33-26 overall and 8-6 in offensive boards. The Scots also led 20-12 in assists and 10-0 in second-chance points.
