EDINBORO, Pa. – After six weeks of competing on the road, the Edinboro wrestling team finally had its home debut on Tuesday night. It was also the initial home appearance for first-year head coach
Matt Hill. The former Fighting Scot saw his rebuilding squad drop a 23-15 decision to Tennessee-Chattanooga, followed by a 26-12 setback to the team he served as an assistant coach for, Kent State.
The Fighting Scots are now 1-3 in duals, while Chattanooga evened its record at 1-1. Kent State improved to 4-5 with the win.
Three Fighting Scots picked up a pair of wins –
Jacob Oliver at 174 lbs.,
Dylan Reynolds at 197 lbs., and
Jon Spaulding at heavyweight.
Edinboro will break for the holidays before returning to action on January 1-2 in the Southern Scuffle.
TENNESSEE-CHATTANOOGA 23, EDINBORO 15
Edinboro jumped out to a 15-6 lead against Chattanooga, but the Mocs won the last four matches, two by bonus points. The match started at 157 lbs. with Ryan Resnick of UTC winning a 9-4 decision over
Tim Suter. The Fighting Scots picked up bonus-point wins in the next two matches.
Fritz Hoehn, after missing time with an injury, returned at 165 lbs. with an impressive 16-0 technical fall (2:29) over Trey Watson.
Jacob Oliver improved to 16-2 at 174 lbs. as the redshirt freshman won a 13-5 major decision over Hunter Fortner.
Dominic Lampe would pick up a 9-5 decision over
Zach Ancewicz at 184 lbs., but the Fighting Scots would come up with late wins in the next two bouts to go up 15-6.
Dylan Reynolds posted a takedown with 16 seconds left, and despite an escape by Rod Jones in the final seconds, came up with a 3-2 decision at 197 lbs. to improve to 15-6.
Jon Spaulding's (12-9) win at heavyweight was even more dramatic. The sophomore registered the winning takedown with seven seconds remaining for a 5-3 decision.
Unfortunately, that was the last win that the Fighting Scots would get. Jake Huffine won by fall over
Richie Gomez at 133 lbs. to give the Mocs the lead at 17-15. Chattanooga clinched the match with decisions at 141 and 149 lbs.
KENT STATE 26, EDINBORO 12
The Golden Flashes would jump out to a 6-0 lead with decisions at 157 and 165 lbs., but
Jacob Oliver got the Fighting Scots on the board with a 3-2 decision over Dylan Barreiro. The two entered the third period tied at 2, but Oliver would ride out Barreiro over the two minute period to record a riding time advantage of 1:47. The riding time point gave him a 3-2 decision and a 17-2 record.
Kent State would go up 12-3 after a fall at 184 lbs., but
Dylan Reynolds and
Jon Spaulding won decisions to pull the Fighting Scots to within 12-9. Reynolds was an 8-3 winner over Lane Hinkle. The redshirt junior has a 16-6 record.
A week ago, Spaulding won by fall over KSU's Spencer Berthhold at the Cleveland State Open. The sophomore had to work a little harder on Tuesday night, but he would come away with a 5-2 decision to boost his record to 13-9.
Unfortunately, Edinboro would come up with just one win in the lightweights, as Kent State won by major decision at 125 lbs., by fall at 133 lbs., and by major decision at 149 lbs.
Carmine Ciotti picked up the win for Edinboro at 141 lbs. The transfer from Gannon rallied for a 4-3 lead with a takedown early in the third period, but would give up a point for locked hands, plus an escape in the final seconds. However, he had riding time and the match went into overtime tied at 5-5. Ciotti would claim the 7-5 decision in sudden victory with a takedown with 38 seconds left.
