Edinboro Clinches Home Playoff Game While Rallying for 86-78 Win at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – Keshawn Liggins and Jaymon Mason scored 22 points apiece as Edinboro used a big second half to rally for an 86-78 win at Clarion on Saturday afternoon. The victory boosted Edinboro to 16-8 overall and 13-7 in the PSAC West and clinches a home game in the PSAC Tournament. Clarion suffered its 15th straight loss while dropping to 3-23 and 0-20, respectively.

The 16 wins are the most since Pat Cleary took over as head coach five years ago. His 2015-16 squad finished at 15-11. The Fighting Scots are currently in fourth place with games at Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday, February 21 and vs. Mercyhurst on Saturday, February 24. Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the Western Division in the Coaches' Preseason Poll.

IUP leads the PSAC West with a 15-4 record. The Crimson Hawks host California(Pa.) this evening. Gannon is second at 14-6, and Slippery Rock is third at 14-7 with one game remaining at Gannon next Saturday. Pitt-johnstown, 12-9 in league play, can finish no higher than fifth in the division after losing today to Slippery Rock. Edinboro won both regular season meetings with the Mountain Cats. The top two teams receive first round byes, with the third and fourth seeds hosting first round games on Monday,   

The possibility of hosting a home game was the furthest thing from Cleary's mind over the first 20 minutes, as Clarion jumped out to a 42-35 lead at the half on Senior Day. It was only that close thanks to Liggins' 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Edinboro jumped out to an early 8-5 lead, but a 16-2 run by the Golden Eagles put the Scots in a 21-10 hole. Cameron Grumley accounted for 13 of the 16 points.
The second half saw Clarion maintain the lead, boosting it again to 11 points at 50-39 with just under 17 minutes to play. An 11-3 run pulled the Fighting Scots to within 53-50 with 12:57 to play when Anthony Coleman drained a 3-pointer.

Edinboro finally regained the lead at 60-58 with 9:26 to play on a 3-pointer from Mason. Grumley's jumper knotted the score at 60-60, but Edinboro took the lead for good on a 3-point play by Trey Staunch. That made it 63-60 with 8:35 remaining.

The Fighting Scots would eventually boost the lead to 11 points at 76-65 with 2:47 left when Mason drilled another three. Edinboro would make 8-of-12 free throws over the last two minutes to hold off the Golden Eagles.

Liggins registered his 14th double double as the senior forward finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. He has now scored 572 points this season, which ranks ninth in a season.

Mason battled foul trouble in the first half, sitting the final seven minutes of the half and scoring seven points. He would add 15 points in the second half to finish with 22. He made 3-of-5 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws.

Mason boosted his career total to 1,921 points. The leaves him 34 points away from breaking the career scoring record of 1,954 points, held by Tyrone Mason, his father.

Coleman just missed his second double double against Clarion this year. The junior guard scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Like Mason, he had three 3-pointers. Coleman had 24 points and 10 boards in the first meeting with Clarion.

After going scoreless in the first half, Staunch scored nine points in the second half, making 7-of-7 free throws, and finished with five points while playing 19 minutes. Mike Beck added eight points.

Grumley paced Clarion with 29 points, making 10-of-21 field goals with a three, and going 8-of-11 at the line. He added six rebounds. Brandon Williams added 16 points and Maqi Watson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Edinboro shot 42.4 percent from the floor (25-of-59), making 9-of-21 3-pointers, and went 27-for-36 at the line. Clarion would finish at 44.6 percent (29-of-65) after a hot start, The Golden Eagles were 7-of-20 from beyond the arc and 13-of-20 at the line.  After trailing on the glass at the half, Edinboro finished with a 41-35 rebounding advantage. Clarion committed 13 turnovers and Edinboro turned it over 12 times.
