Fighting Scots Late Rally Comes Up Short Against Concord, Seeks Revenge on Sunday

SALEM, Va. The Edinboro softball team dropped three contests on Saturday at the Salem Tournament at Moyer Field.  The Fighting Scots are 0-5 this season and will play Concord again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Shepherd 5, Edinboro 3
Olivia Jankowski and Shannon Gilbert hit home runs for the Fighting Scots, but it wasn't enough to avoid a third straight loss to start the season. Jankowski hit a solo home run to left center with two outs in the first inning to give Edinboro a 1-0 lead. Shepherd would answer with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Danna Heh reached on a bunt single with one out and Gilbert followed with a two-run homer to right field for a 3-2 lead. The Rams answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, with two scoring on a double by Connor Gilligan. That would end the scoring. Carley Nasca went the distance for the Fighting Scots, scattering 13 hits with a walk and three strikeouts. She allowed just three earned runs.

Chowan 9, Edinboro 1 (5 innings)
Chowan jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first three innings. The Hawks scored a run in the top of the first, four runs in the second and two in the third. Maycee Shumaker put the Fighting Scots in a position to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Shumaker doubled to center field and was then replaced by Lauren Gierlak as a pinch runner. After stealing third base, Heather Barrett singled, allowing Gierlak to score Edinboro's only run in the game. Chowan scored two more times in the bottom of the fifth, with Miranda Glover scoring the final run in the game. Amanda Mets fell to 0-2, while Concord's Darby Patzrick improved to 2-3.

Concord 4, Edinboro 2
Concord scored two runs in the top off the second and one in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brittany Allen doubled to center to start of the inning, while Rose Haggerty brought Allen home on a double to center field. However, two Fighting Scots struck out swinging and looking to end the inning, respectively. Kerri Stevens fell to 0-2, while the Mountain Lion's Shelby Griffis picked up her fifth win of the year (5-4).
