Shumaker's Three-Run Homer Leads Edinboro to 5-3 Win over Concord for First Win of the Season

SALEM, Va. – The Edinboro softball team picked up its first win of the 2018 season in dramatic fashion on Sunday morning. Maycee Shumaker hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to give the Fighting Scots a 5-3 win over Concord. The Fighting Scots depart the Salem Tournament with a 1-5 record. Concord is 3-7.

Edinboro trailed the Mountain Lions 3-2 entering the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Olivia Jankowski led off the inning with a double. Shannon Gilbert walked as a pinch hitter to put runners on first and second. Heather Barrett grounded out to the pitcher with the runners moving up, and Emily Haggerty grounded out to third to make it two outs. Shumaker, a freshman who started at designated player, followed with her first career home run on a 2-1 pitch to centerfield.

Kerri Stevens set down Concord in the bottom of the seventh, allowing just a walk in the seventh. The senior entered the game in the fourth inning and did not allow a run in four innings of work. She did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out three.

After handing Edinboro a 4-2 defeat on Saturday night, Concord took advantage of an error to push across three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Edinboro closed the gap to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Three walks loaded the bases, and Rose Haggerty drove in Brooklyn Magill and

Brittany Allen with a two-run single. It was Edinboro's first hit of the game.

Edinboro now heads to Clermont, Florida for six more games this week. They play Charleston (WV) on Monday at 2 p.m.
