CLERMONT, Fla. – The Edinboro softball team fell to Charleston (WV), 12-3 on Monday afternoon in its first contest at the PFX Spring Games.
The Fighting Scots fall to 1-6 on the year, while the Golden Eagles pick up their third straight win and eighth in their last nine outings, improving to 12-4.
Charleston (WV) came out the gate reaching base on four of their first five at-bats. The Golden Eagles had two singles, and reached on a fielding error and a fielder's choice.
Edinboro trailed 2-0 at the end of the first inning, and would be outscored 7-0 over the next three innings. However, the Fighting Scots got into a rhythm in the bottom in of the fourth.
Shannon Gilbert started the inning off by hitting a triple to right field. After
Rose Haggerty struck out swinging on the next at-bat,
Victoria Allocco hit a two-run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 9-2.
Roni Lipinski reached base in the inning on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Abby Sallot replaced Lipinski once she reached second, but she was unable to advance in the inning, as the inning ended with a pop-up and a strikeout looking.
In the bottom of the sixth, Gilbert once again provided with an offensive spark. The sophomore left fielder doubled to right field. She scored later in the inning on a Lipinski single to right center field.
Trailing 9-3, Charleston's (WV) Emily Dutton made sure the Fighting Scots never came any closer. After hitting a three-run home run in the top of the third inning, the Golden Eagle shortstop hit another three-run bomb in the top of the seventh, increasing their lead to 12-3.
Gilbert led the Fighting Scots with two runs. She was also the only Edinboro player with multiple hits against the Golden Eagles, going 2-for-3
Kendal Marshall and Dutton each recorded three runs apiece for Charleston (WV). Dutton also added six RBI's. Karli Pinkerton and Shelby Ume each connected on a team-high 3-of-4 at-bats.
Carley Nasca fell to 0-2 with the loss, while Carlee Lucas improved to 7-2 with the win.
The Fighting Scots return to action on Wednesday with a pair of games against No. 20 Indianapolis and Saint Michael's at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
