LEESBURG, Fla. -
Carley Nasca pitched a no-hitter against Silver Lake on Thursday morning, but the Edinboro softball team fell in their second contest of the day to Indiana(Pa.), 5-2 at Sleepy Hollow #5. The Fighting Scots, who are competing in the PFX Spring Games, are now 3-8 overall. The Lakers fell to 0-7, while the Crimson Hawks improved to 3-6.
Edinboro concludes action in the PFX Spring Games tomorrow against No. 20 Southern New Hampshire. First pitch is slated for 8 a.m.Â
Game 1 - Edinboro 17, Silver Lake 0Â
Carley Nasca pitched her first no-hitter of the season in the 17-0 win over Silver Lake. She struck out 10 of the 15 batters she faced, while allowing one walk. Offensively, Edinboro found its mark early on, as the Fighting Scots had 17, equaling their mark in the runs column for its third win of the season.Â
The Fighting Scots scored five runs in the first inning.
Shannon Gilbert collected an RBI in her first at-bat, as Lauren Gierlack scored on an error by the Laker's second baseman.
Heather Barrett increased Edinboro's lead to 3-0, with RBI double, sending
Cheyenne Bothun and
Rose Haggerty home.
Brittany Allen advanced Barrett to home plate on a double to left field, and Allen scored on an error later in the inning by Silver Lake's first baseman. The Fighting Scots also had four of their five stolen bases in the contest in the top of the first inning.
10 different Fighting Scots combined for the runs against the Lakers, including six with multiple runs. They also combined for 10 RBI's, including three from Haggerty and two from Bothun and Barrett.
Haggerty led everyone with a game-high three runs and three RBI's. She hit a two-run home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning. In addition to her run in the first inning, Gierlak hit a triple in the top of the second. Allen led the Fighting Scots at the plate. She went 3-for-3 on her at-bats for two runs. Bothun had two runs and two RBI's.
Brooklyn Magill and Abby Sallot each connected on 2-of-3 at-bats for two runs in relief of Gilbert and Barrett.
Courtney Allen scored twice and had an RBI.
Maycee Shumaker and
Jessica Little each also tacked on a run for the Scots.Â
Game 2 - IUP 5, Edinboro 2
Edinboro fell to IUP, 5-2, in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon. The two teams will meet again on March 24 in Indiana(Pa.) for a double-header. Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.
Heather Barrett walked to first base and then stole second. After advancing to third base on an
Olivia Jankowski single through the right side,
Shannon Gilbert grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Barrett to tack on the first run in the game.Â
However, the Crimson Hawks answered in the top of the fourth with two runs. Alaina Montgomery scored an unearned run and Kaitlyn Beers gave IUP a 2-1 advantage. The Crimson Hawks increased their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Montgomery and Beers each scored their second runs in the game, whie Sara Hall added her first. The Crimson Hawks, who finished the game with four hits, had three in the fifth inning alone.
Danna Heh cut the Fighting Scots deficit to three runs, as she scored off a Gilbert RBI single up the middle. However, Edinboro only had two runners reach base the rest of the contest.Â
Edinboro was the better offensive team with five hits. Heh went 2-for-4 on her at-bats and Gilbert had both RBI's for the Fighting Scots.
Amanda Metz took the loss for Edinboro. In 3.0 innings pitched, she allowed three hits for three runs and struck out three batters faced.
Lauren Zola captured the win for IUP. She pitched the entire contest, striking out eight batters, while giving up two errors and walking two batters.
