Fighting Scots Fall to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire, 14-3, on Final Day at PFX Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Edinboro softball team concluded play at the PFX Spring Games on Friday with a 14-3 loss to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire at Legends Way 3. The Fighting Scots leave the sunshine state with a 3-9 overall record, including a 2-4 mark in their games played in Central Florida, while the Penmen improved to 16-1.

Edinboro jumped out to an early 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Olivia Jankowski reached base on a third strike passed ball by the Penmen's catcher, Emily Critch. Jankowski would then advance to second and third base on an error by shortstop Brittany Perdigao. She scored on a passed ball with two outs in the inning.

The Fighting Scots lead would soon evaporate, as Southern New Hampshire responded with a 9-0 burst between the next two innings. The Penmen tacked on four runs in the top of the second and five in the top of the third.

After giving up a home run in the top of the third to Erin Garczynski, Amanda Metz, who had replaced Carley Nasca, retired nine straight batters before giving up another hit in the top of the sixth. No team scored again, until the bottom of the fifth when Roni Lipinski connected on an RBI-double to left center field. That sent both Heather Barrett and Shannon Gilbert home and cut Edinboro's deficit to six runs at 9-3.

But the Penmen caught fire in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs. Kerri Stevens got the final out of the inning on a fly out to center field.

The Fighting Scots were held scoreless over the final two innings, reached base one time in both the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Edinboro was the better offensive team over the first six innings, but Southern New Hampshire was able to capitalize on six Fighting Scot errors, including four in the top of the second inning for four runs. They also had five of their 10 hits in the top of the seventh. The Penmen also had their share of errors, committing four, while allowing eight hits.

Nasca took the loss for Edinboro, falling to 1-3 on the year. She pitched in 2.2 innings. Ali Atherton got her first win of the season for Southern New Hampshire, improving to 1-0.

Danna Heh was the only Fighting Scot with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 on her at-bats. Victoria Allocco, Lauren Gierlak, Rose Haggerty, Jessica Little, Jankowski and Lipinski each had one hit. Lipinski also had the lone steal in the contest.

Brittany Perdiago went 3-of-5 on the day for SNH, scoring three runs and adding three RBI's. Garczynski scored two runs, with one coming on a home run, and had three RBI's, and Jordan Wade also added two runs. Erin Tyrrell also had two hits on the day. Gabriella Vachon and Critch each had two runs in for the Penmen.

The Fighting Scots return to action on March 24 in a doubleheader at IUP. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
