Fighting Scots Lead Late Before Dropping Pair at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team began a stretch of seven doubleheaders in nine days with a pair of tough losses at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots held late leads in both games before The Rock rallied for a 6-4 win in the first game and a 6-3 victory in game number two.
The losses dropped Edinboro to 4-17 overall and 0-8 in PSAC West action. Slippery Rock is now 21-14 and 8-4, respectively. The two teams will meet again to play two on Sunday, only this time at Edinboro.

GAME 1:  Slippery Rock 6, Edinboro 4
The Fighting Scots fell behind 3-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, as Slippery Rock scored twice in the first inning and once more in the fifth. One swing changed. Edinboro loaded the bases on singles by Shannon Gilbert, Brittany Allen, and Roni Lipinski. Victoria Allocco proceeded to unload the bases as the sophomore poked a grand slam over the centerfield fence, her second of the season. It came after she stayed alive following a foul dropped pop up. Allocco's blast gave Edinboro a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. SRU responded with a pair of home runs. Alexa Guglielmino led off the frame with a long ball to center off starter Amanda Metz. One batter later, Kerri Stevens relieved Metz. Her first batter, Megan Brown, reached on an error, and Kailey Myers followed with the game-winning home to the short fence in center. Edinboro had one last chance when Shannon Gilbert singled with two outs in the seventh, but Olivia Jankowski grounded out to second to end the game. Edinboro actually out-hit The Rock, 9-8, but committed six errors. Danna Heh led the Scots, going 3-for-4, while Gilbert was 2-for-4. Stevens fell to 1-5 with the loss.

GAME 2:  Slippery Rock 6, Edinboro 3
The bottom of the sixth proved to be Edinboro's undoing again. The Fighting Scots heled a 3-2 lead going into the frame, but SRU scored four times in the inning, courtesy of four hits and a pair of Edinboro errors. Kailey Myers again provided the winning hit thanks to a three-run homer to left. Edinboro went down in order in the top of the seventh. The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first on Brittany Allen's RBI single. Rose Haggerty's single in the top of the third inning drove in Olivia Jankowski to make it 2-0, but Slippery Rock pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-2. Courtney Allen was hit by a pitch to start the fourth, and she eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Ashley Pearson to give the lead back to Edinboro at 3-2. Allen and Jankowski each went 2-for-3 for the Scots. Carley Nasca took the loss to fall to 2-7, going the first five-plus innings.
