Edinboro Rallies from Eight Runs Down with Eight-Run Seventh Inning to Earn Split with Slippery Rock

EDINBORO, Pa. – Victoria Allocco capped a nine-run rally with a walk-off, bases-clearing double to lead the Edinboro softball team to a 9-8 win over Slippery Rock in the first game of a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday. The Rock would use a rally of its own for a 6-3 win in game number two.

The game one victory was the first Western Division win for the Fighting Scots, as they snapped a six-game losing streak and broke SRU's seven-game winning streak. Edinboro is now 5-18 overall and 1-9 in PSAC West action. The split leaves Slippery Rock with a 22-15 overall record and 9-5 in league play.

This marked the second straight day the two teams played. Edinboro is in the midst of a stretch of seven doubleheaders in nine days to wrap up the regular season. The Fighting Scots will make it three twinbills in three days on Monday when they host California(Pa.) at 2:30 p.m. The Vulcans will be the home team since their home field is undergoing renovations this year.

GAME 1:  Edinboro 9, Slippery Rock 8

SRU was within one out of ending the game in six innings before Edinboro staged an amazing rally. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Lauren Gierlak singled and came all the way around to score on Shannon Gilbert's double down the right field line. That was the precursor for an incredible seventh inning. The first five batters reached safely for Edinboro, with Courtney Allen and Roni Lipinski driving in runs with singles. Maycee Shumaker made it 8-5 with a two-run double to centerfield. After a groundout, Gierlak made it 8-6 with an RBI double to left center. Gilbert reached base when she was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout left the Fighting Scots with two outs. Brittany Allen rolled a single through the left side to load the bases. Allocco then cleared the bases with a double to right center, sending head coach Dan Gierlak's team into a frenzy. On Saturday, Allocco hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to give Edinboro a short-lived lead.  SRU had opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, then added four more runs in the third inning. Kailey Myers hit a home run for the third straight game in the fourth inning to make it 7-0, and The Rock added an unearned run in the sixth for an 8-0 lead. After being held to an infield single in the first five innings, Edinboro would end up with an 11-9 advantage in hits. Allocco went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, with Brittany Allen going 2-for-3 and Gierlak 2-for-4 with an RBI. Amanda Metz (2-5) picked up the win in relief, coming in to throw the last 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out three.

Senior Kerri Stevens was honored in Senior Day festivities prior to game one.
Edinboro appeared on its way to a sweep before Slippery Rock rallied in the sixth for the third time in two days. The comeback spoiled a strong pitching performance by Kerri Stevens, who was honored prior to the first game as Edinboro's lone senior on Senior Day.  SRU opened the game with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning, but Edinboro responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Shannon Gilbert plated one with an RBI single and Olivia Jankowski accounted for the other on a force out. The Fighting scots would take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third with two outs. Gilbert reached on a single through the right side, moved up on a wild pitch, and scored on Jankowski's run-scoring hit to left field. After Edinboro left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Slippery Rock took advantage of three Boro errors in the top of the sixth to push across three runs. Stevens (1-6), Edinboro's lone senior, was driven from the game during the inning, but allowed just one earned run in 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits. She walked three and matched her career-high of seven strikeouts. Gilbert led Edinboro with 2 hits in 4 at bats.
