BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team nearly came back against Bloomsburg, winning four of the final five bouts, but opened EWL action this season with 21-19 loss on the road to the Huskies Friday evening. The two teams split their five individual matches, but the Huskies used three pins in the first four bouts to earn the win.
Carmine Ciotti (141 lbs.),
Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.),
Jacob Oliver (174 lbs.),
Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) and
Jon Spaulding (Hwt.) all picked up wins for the Fighting Scots in the loss. The Fighting Scots fell to 1-4, 0-1 in the EWL while the Huskies moved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the EWL.
Bloomsburg opened up the dual with a pair of wins at 125 and 133 lbs.
Carmine Ciotti got Edinboro on the board in his bout at 141 lbs. thanks to a fall over Aaron Coleman in just 1:45 to pull the Fighting Scots within three once again, 9-6. Ciotti has picked up wins in his last two duals and improved to 12-10 on the season 1-0 in the EWL.
Fritz Hoehn used a taken down early in the first period against Dominick DeMarco at 165 lbs. before the Husky got escape. A takedown with less than five seconds left gave Hoehn a 4-1 lead heading into the second period. Hoehn chose down to start the second period and got an early escape to push his lead to 5-1. DeMarco used an escape late to pull within 5-2 heading into the third period. The two started at neutral before Hoehn got an early takedown to push his lead to 7-2. With over a minute of riding time, Hoehn picked up an 8-2 decision. He improved to 6-4 on the season.
Redshirt freshman
Jacob Oliver got an early takedown just 14 seconds in the bout at 174 lbs. to jump out to a 2-0 lead over Anthony Vetrano in the first period. He would ride out the rest of the period to have 2:46 of riding time stocked up. After choosing down to start the second, Oliver got an escape just two seconds into the period before a take down and four nearfall points staked his lead at 9-0. Vetrano chose down to start the third and got his second stall warning giving Oliver a point. A reversal for Vetrano and a quick escape pushed Oliver's lead to 11-2. With over four minutes of riding time, Oliver picked up the 12-2 major decision to improve to 18-4 earning his seventh major decision of the season.
Dylan Reynolds and Kyle Murphy went scoreless in the opening period before Reynolds chose bottom to start the second. An escape early in the period and a takedown pushed the Fighting Scot's lead to 3-0 going into the third period. An escape by Murphy was the only point score in the final period. With over a minute of riding time, Reynolds earned the 4-1 decision, improving to 22-9 on the season.
In the final match of the evening,
Jon Spaulding and Bruce Graeber did not score a point in the first period, but both wrestlers got a stall warning. With Graeber choosing down to start the second, he used and early escape to take a 1-0 lead, however it was negated by a second stall warning tying the bout up at 1-1. A penalty point late in the period gave Spaulding a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. Spaulding added to his lead with an escape midway through the period and Graeber was called for a second penalty point to give Spaulding the 4-1 decision. Spaulding improved to 14-11 this year.
The Fighting Scots do not get a break as they travel to Rider on Saturday, January 12. The dual in Lawrenceville, N.J. starts off at 7:00 p.m.
