Atherley Leads Sweep of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team began the 2019 portion of its season with a pair wins on Saturday at Pittsburgh. The Fighting Scots won by scores of 59-34 and 67-26 over the Steelwheelers to improve to 12-5 and run their win streak to three games.

Game 1 – Edinboro 59, Pittsburgh 34
The Fighting Scots dominated the first three quarters behind a huge game from Kevin Atherley. He finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, adding five assists. Atherley made 10-of-16 field goals. Chayse Wolf went 6-of-8 from the floor, ending with 13 points and seven assists. Jacob Spillers came off the bench to toss in 12 points, and Cor'Rales Dupree had eight points and eight rebounds. Edinboro would jump out to an 18-11 lead after one quarter, and built the margin to 33-17 at the half. Any Pittsburgh hopes of a comeback ended in the third quarter as the Fighting Scots outscored the Steelwheelers, 20-11, to build the lead to 53-28. Edinboro shot 46.7 percent from the floor (28-of-60) while holding Pittsburgh to 31.4 percent (16-of-51). The Fighting Scots also held a wide 39-22 advantage on the glass.

Game 2 – Edinboro 67, Pittsburgh 26
Four players scored in double figures and the Fighting Scots turned in a strong defensive effort. Atherley again had a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, making 7-of-9 field goal attempts. Spillers also scored 14 points, while Wolf flirted with a triple double with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Dupree had 12 points (5-of-8 FGs) and seven rebounds. Pittsburgh actually scored the first two baskets for a 4-0 lead, but the Fighting Scots would pull ahead 11-8 at the end of the first quarter. That was as many points as Pittsburgh would score in a period. Edinboro dominated the second quarter, 23-4, and outscored Pittsburgh, 17-8, for a 51-20 lead after three quarters. Edinboro shot 57.1 percent from the floor (32-of-56) while holding the Steelwheelers to 27.7 percent (13-of-47). The Fighting Scots also had a 38-23 rebounding advantage and forced 16 turnovers.
