The Short Story:  The night belonged to Michaela Barnes. The junior guard dropped in 35 points, in the process becoming the fourth player on this year's team with 1,000 career points, to lead Edinboro to a win over Mercyhurst for the 14th time in the last 15 meetings. Barnes made 10-of-15 field goals, with a 3-pointer, and went 14-of-15 at the line. The Fighting Scots almost needed every one of those points, as Mercyhurst closed a 13-point deficit (70-57) with 2:45 remaining to four points at 72-68 a minute-and-a-half later. Edinboro would run off the next six points, with Barnes and Jontay Walton each making 3-of-4 free throws. Walton would finish with 14 points, while Ciara Rosten added 11. The Fighting Scots have now won three straight games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 17-8 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Lakers scored the final nine points to forge a 17-17 tie at the end of one quarter. It was a sign of what would come for most of the game, with six ties and 11 lead changes.
  • Mercyhurst made it 11 straight points to start the second quarter, and the Lakers would go on to build their largest lead of the game at five points on two occasions, the last at 31-26 with 4:06 remaining. Edinboro would rally in the final minutes, and when Barnes scored on a layup with 47 seconds to go, the Fighting Scots would go into the half with a 37-36 lead.
  • Barnes ended the first half with 14 points after needing 12 points to reach 1,000 for her career. The junior guard reached the mark on a layup with 1:58 to play off a nice pass from Allison Thompson.
  • Edinboro grabbed the lead for good early in the third quarter when Barnes drained a 3-pointer with 6:51 to play, making it 44-42. That jumpstarted a 9-0 run, with Ciara Rosten and Jontay Walton scoring on layups, followed by a Barnes layup to boost the lead to 50-42 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter.
  • The resilient Lakers would pull to within two points at 52-50 on Kori Sidwell's layup with 1:31 to play. Neither team would score again until Bridgette Shaffer dropped in a 3-pointer from the right corner as the buzzer sounded for a 55-50 lead.
  • Shaffer's three was part of a run of 10 straight points for Edinboro, making it 62-50. Michelle Jahn hit a 3-pointer to start the final period, followed by a pair of short jumpers by Rosten and Barnes.
  • After Mercyhurst closed to within seven points at 62-55, six straight Boro points, all by Barnes, gave Edinboro its biggest lead of the night at 68-55 with just under five minutes left.
  • Edinboro still led by 13 at 70-57 with 2:45 to play when Mercyhurst made one last run. Spurred by a pair of turnovers, the Lakers went on a 11-2 run and suddenly were within four points at 62-68 with 78 seconds left.
  • Barnes and Walton halted any upset hopes by Mercyhurst, as each made 3-of-4 free throws over the next minute, boosting the lead back to ten points and securing win number 13 for first-year head coach Callie Wheeler.
