Short-Handed Fighting Scots Suffer Narrow 77-73 Setback at Seton Hill

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Seton Hill 77, Edinboro 73
  • Records:  Edinboro (4-7, 1-5 PSAC West), Seton Hill (3-9, 1-5 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Greensburg, Pa. – McKenna Center
  • The Short Story: A short-handed Edinboro team playing without two of its leading scorers came up just short at Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 77-73 decision to the Griffins. The loss was the third straight for the Fighting Scots, who were playing the first of three straight games on the road. Seton Hill, meanwhile, snapped a three-game losing streak thanks to 24 points from Trevor Blondin and 20 from Bate Davis. Edinboro never led in the game, but cut a 10-point deficit to just two in the second half. They were never able to get over the hump despite another strong effort from Jaryn Simpson. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 26 points, his fifth game of 20-or-more points this season.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill used a string of eight straight points to jump out to a 15-6 lead early in the games. Edinboro was held scoreless for almost four minutes during the run. The Griffins grabbed their largest lead at 24-12 with eight minutes remaining in the half, and still led 31-22 with three minutes to play.
  • The Fighting Scots used a 9-0 run to forge a 31-31 tied with 36 seconds left in the half. Jaryn Simpson started the run with a pair of free throws, then after a Seton Hill turnover, scored on a layup and free throw just 13 seconds later. Daylon Harris would hit a jumper, and when Simpson scored a layup, the contest was tied at 31-31.
  • Nathan Davis would hit a 3-pointer to give Seton Hill a 34-31 lead at the half. Trevor Blondin had a big first half with 16 points, making 7-of-10 field goals.
  • Davis came out hot for the Griffins in the second half, scoring nine points in a 16-9 run to start the second half. That left Seton Hill with a 50-40 lead with 13:42 remaining. The young Edinboro squad refused to go away, answering with a 14-6 burst that pulled the Fighting Scots to within two at 56-54 with 7:54 to play. Simpson accounted for Edinboro's first eight points on a pair of 3-pointers and a 15-foot jumper. Freshman Turner Kurt closed the run with a short shot in the paint, followed by a pair of free throws.
  • Unfortunately, Edinboro could get no closer. Seton Hill would build the lead back up to seven, and the Fighting Scots could only narrow the gap to three at 76-73 with seven seconds left on three free throws by Simpson.
