Kopacko, Miletska Three-Time Winners as Fighting Scots Open with Win over IUP

Yana Miletsa won the 200-yard IM, 200-yard backstroke, and 200-yard breaststroke.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's swimming team got the 2019-20 season off to a successful start on Friday evening, handing visiting Indiana(Pa.) a 110-95 defeat. The Crimson Hawks are now 0-2.

There were plenty of accolades to go around for head coach Chris Rhodes' Fighting Scots. Edinboro would post first place finishes in eight events, with five different swimmers winning multiple events. In addition, Katelyn Kopacko, who qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships a year ago and holds the school record in the 50-yard freestyle, recorded an NCAA B time in the first meet of the year. Seven different swimmers recorded PSAC qualifying marks in a total of ten events.

Kopacko, Yana Miletska and Paige Smith all took part in three wins. Kopacko touched first in the 50-yard freestyle with the NCAA B qualifying time of 24:01, and also swam on a pair of winning relays, the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Miletska was the winner in the 200-yard IM (2:10.25), the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.98), and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.60). Smith, a freshman, posted wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.83), the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.66), and was on the winning 200-yard medley relay. She would actually record wins in each of her first three events collegiate events.

Kaitlyn Daiger and Makayla Scheu were double-winners while competing on the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. Rachel Roscoe completed the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Fighting Scots will return to the pool next Friday, October 25, swimming at Tiffin.
