  • Records:  Edinboro (1-6, 1-3 PSAC West), Slippery Rock (7-0, 4-0 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Sox Harrison Stadium
  • The Short Story:  Edinboro went toe-to-toe with ninth-ranked Slippery Rock before finally succumbing to one of the top offenses in Division II. The Fighting Scots trailed just 27-23 after three quarters, but The Rock would score a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to finally subdue the upset-minded Fighting Scots. Edinboro scored a season-high 30 points, and actually held an SRU attack that ranked second in Division II in scoring (51.7 ppg.) to a season-low 41 points. The day belonged to wide receiver Ta'Nauz Gregory and quarterback Levi Becker. Gregory caught 11 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown, in the process setting the school record for career receptions, now at 214. He added 111 yards on kickoff returns. Becker, who began the year as the third string quarterback, made his first career start and threw for 207 yards and 2 TDs. However, the Fighting Scots could not contain Roland Rivers, who finished with 415 yards in total offense (391 yards passing, 24 yards receiving).
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro opened a high-scoring first half with a nine-play, 69-yard drive on the opening kickoff. The drive was directed by third string quarterback Levi Becker, who was making his first career start, but featured a revitalized running game. Dorian Woody scampered 22 yards and CJ Reyes-Diggs followed with a 23-yard run on the next play to put Edinboro at the SRU 12. The drive reached the three before stalling, with Vicente Arriagada coming in to boot a 23-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 11:20 left in the first quarter.
  • The potent Slippery Rock offense answered with a nine-play drive of its own, covering 66 yards. Senior quarterback Roland Rivers III was the focal point, as expected. He completed six passes for 52 yards, then covered the last three yards himself to give Slippery Rock a 7-3 lead with 7:29 left in the quarter.
  • The next possession for each team failed to produce a score, but Edinboro would grab a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter. Six of the seven plays in the drive were runs, but the biggest play was a perfectly throw pass from Becker to T'Nauz Gregory covering 45 yards. Woody capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in the quarter.
  • Not to be outdone, Slippery Rock would score oin its next three drives. The Rock regained the lead at 14-10 on a two-yard run by Charles Snorweah. It culminated a 10-play, 84-yard march that featured Rivers throwing for 48 yards and Snorweah running for 37 more.
  • Gregory gave the Fighting Scots excellent field position on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 56 yards to the SRU 41. Four plays, aided by a pass interference penalty, the Fighting Scots took the lead again at 17-14 with 11:31 left in the half. Becker found Kahlil Jackson with a short pass, and the sophomore wide receiver turned it into a 24-yard touchdown, the first of his career.
  • SRU would take a 27-17 lead at the half with two more touchdowns in the quarter. DeSean Dinkins gave the lead back to The Rock for good with a 10-yard TD run, capping a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
  • After an Edinboro punt pinned SRU back at its own five, The Rock used up over four minutes, going 95 yards on 12 plays. Rivers was again the culprit, completing 7-of-9 passes for 84 yards. Snorweah then scored his second touchdown on a three-yard run with 2:02 remaining. Anthony Mendicino blocked the extra point.
  • Edinboro would account for the lone scoring in the third quarter, holding the Rock scoreless while scoring twice on Arriagada three-pointers. The first came following a Brandon Anderson interception near midfield. The Fighting Scots would drive to the 17 before Arriagada came in and converted a 34-yard field goal with 9:47 left in the third quarter.
  • Slippery Rock followed with a drive of its own that would stall in Edinboro territory. Jake Chapla's 46-yard field goal was wide to the left.
  • Back came the Scots, closing the gap to 27-23 with 2:05 left in the quarter. The penalty-filled drive – with five flags on the two teams – was aided by a 20-yard completion from Becker to Jon Long.to the SRU 28. The drive was halted four plays later, but Arriagada stepped in and put a 44-yard field goal through the uprights.
  • Slippery Rock avoided Edinboro's upset bid with a pair of scores in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 10-play, 65-yard march that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Rivers to Hunter Litwin. Litwin made an impressive diving catch in the back corner of the end zone to five SRU a 34-23 lead with 13:01 left in the game.
  • It appeared that Edinboro answered immediately. On first down, Woody and Gregory combined on a pitch pass for a 25-yard gain. It was the 210th reception of his career toi break James Clark's school record of 209. On the next play, Becker lofted a pass to Andre Dowdell for a 49-yard touchdown pass, but the play was negated by an illegal procedure penalty. The Fighting Scots eventually were forced to punt, and a short punt gave The Rock the ball back at its own 43 yard-line. Nine plays later, Cinque Sweeting scored on a one-yard run to give Slippery Rock some breathing room at 41-23 with 6:49 remaining.
  • Becker would guide the Fighting Scots on one last scoring drive, covering 75 yards in 10 plays. The drive included hookups of 13 and 27 yards to Gregory. On 4th-and-goal from the SRU 7, they made it three connections in the drive to pull Edinboro to within 41-30. It marked the fourth straight week Gregory caught a touchdown pass.
