Edinboro Looks to Continue Winning Streak with Eastern Swing to East Stroudsburg, Kutztown

MATCH STORYLINES
  • After playing five straight matches at McComb Fieldhouse, Edinboro makes the long trip to eastern Pennsylvania to play a pair of PSAC Central squads. The Fighting Scots face division leader and preseason favorite East Stroudsburg on Thursday, October 3, before playing at Kutztown on Friday, October 4. The Golden Bears were picked second in the Central Division preseason poll.
  • A young Edinboro squad has won four straight matches to improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC Northwest. Edinboro opened the season going 3-1 in the Rebich Investments Invitational, then faced a strong field in the Javelina Volleyball Invitational in Kingsville, Texas. They would come away with one win in four matches. Two weeks ago, Edinboro played in the Edinboro/Gannon Tournament, picking up wins over Saint Rose and Walsh after a loss to Malone. The Scots followed that up a week ago with a pair of 3-0 wins to open PSAC action. Edinboro defeated Lock Haven and Bloomsburg.
  • The Fighting Scots finished with a 14-14 record a year ago and were picked to finish third in the PSAC's Northwest Division. Gannon was voted the preseason favorite in the division in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Northwest Division features five teams this year with the addition of Clarion, who moved from the Southwest Division with Shepherd joining the PSAC.
  • Head coach Missy Soboleski's is in her 15th year as Edinboro's head coach and holds the career record for victories with 324.  All told, she has compiled a 458-357 record while serving as a head coach for 24 years. She previously served as head coach at Mercyhurst and Gannon before taking over at Edinboro in 2005. She has led Edinboro to eight NCAA Division II playoff berths. Soboleski entered the season ranked 22nd in Division II among active coaches in victories, and is third among PSAC coaches.
  • Junior Cierah Jackson was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Javelina Volleyball Invitational. The 5'8" outside hitter has led Edinboro in kills in 11 of the 13 matches, and has been in double figures in all 13. She has earned second team All-PSAC honors while leading the Fighting Scots in kills each of her first two seasons. She leads Edinboro with 169 kills and has boosted her career total to 912 career kills. Jackson was named the PSAC Northwest Division Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Rebich Investments Invitational. 
  • Alicia Eldredge enjoyed an outstanding season as a freshman starting at setter. She finished with a team-leading 916 assists, which ranks 13th in a season Edinboro. She ranked tenth in the PSAC in assists per set (8.88) and service aces per set (0.38). She had 40-or-more assists in eight matches. Eldredge has 438 assists this season. Molly Breier has a team-high 154 digs, bringing her career total to 641.
  • Freshmen have been playing a major role in Edinboro's success in 2019. Bella Burrelli, a 6'0" outside hitter/opposite, ranks second in both kills (133) and digs (118). Erica Sharp, a 6'2", middle hitter/outside hitter, has added 89 kills and a team-high 38 blocks. 
  • East Stroudsburg is off to an 11-3 start and opened PSAC action with wins over Slippery Rock and Clarion. The Warriors come in riding a six-game winning streak.A year ago they finished at 20-11.
  • Kutztown also played at Slippery Rock and Clarion to open conference play, losing both matches. The Golden Bears are 6-6 and looking to snap a four-game losing streak. They were 11-18 a year ago.

UP NEXT
  • The Fighting Scots start a busy stretch of three matches in five days when they face Northwest Division preseason favorite Gannon on Tuesday, October 8. The match at Gannon's Hammermill Center gets underway at 7 p.m. They then return home to host Millersville on Thursday, October 10 and West Chester on Saturday, October 12.
