Three Score in Double Figures as Edinboro Falls at Cleveland State in Exhibition Game

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Turnovers and a hot-shooting Cleveland State team did the Edinboro men's basketball team in on Saturday afternoon as the Vikings handed Edinboro a 79-54 defeat. The game was played at CSU's Wolstein Center in front of 3,533 fans. The contest was an exhibition game for the Division II Fighting Scots, but counted as a regular season game for the Division I Vikings, who are now 1-1.

Cleveland State would shoot 50.9 percent for the game (28-of-55), including 11-of-24 on 3-pointers, while Edinboro shot a chilly 28.3 percent (15-of-53), with a 3-for-19 showing from beyond the arc. Edinboro made 21-of-30 free throws compared to CSU's 12-of-23 figure.

The Fighting Scots only committed 14 turnovers compared to 9 for Cleveland State, but the Vikings held a 20-3 advantage in points off turnovers.  Edinboro held a 37-35 edge on the glass.

Edinboro had three players in double figures, led by Cleveland native Anthony Coleman. The redshirt senior, who opened the season with a 27-point effort in Friday night's win over Thiel, had a game-high 17 points, making 6-of-8 free throws. Trey Staunch added 13 points (5-of-9 FGs, 3-of-5 FTs) and a team-high 6 rebounds. Jaryn Simpson totaled 11 points, making 8-of-8 free throws. Alex jay matched Staunch with 6 rebounds.

Deante Johnson led four Vikings in double digits with 13 points, adding 7 rebounds. Franklyn Penn Jr. had 12 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, with Tre Gomillion and Torrey Pattons contributing 11 points apiece.

While never leading in the game, the Fighting Scots got off to slow start, trailing 41-21 at the half. Edinboro made just 5-of-24 shots (20.8 pct.) while Cleveland State was at 51.5 percent (17-of-33). The second half saw the Fighting Scots hang with the Vikings at 38-33.

Edinboro will return to action with a game that will count on the record on Thursday, November 14, playing at Roberts Wesleyan.
