Fighting Scots Come Up Just Short in PSAC Championship Game, Falling 2-1 at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock would dash Edinboro's hopes for a first-ever PSAC women's soccer championship on Sunday afternoon, edging the Fighting Scots 2-1 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. The Fighting Scots are now 12-6-3 and will await word on a potential NCAA Tournament bid on Monday. The Rock improved to 17-3-0 and earned the PSAC's automatic bid to the national tournament.

The Fighting Scots came into the season ranked sixth in the Western Division in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll, but would end the year second in the division. On Sunday they squared off against division champion Slippery Rock in search of their first PSAC crown. Long-time head coach Gary Kagiavas led his 2015 team to the finals, where they lost to East Stroudsburg by the same 2-1 score, only in overtime.

Slippery Rock would take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a long goal from the far left wing by Sofia Harrison, her seventh of the season. Her long shot from the sideline drifted over the head of goalkeeper Anna Voelker in to the right corner of the net at 22:25.

Both teams mounted solid scoring chances in the first half, with Edinboro holding a 7-5 advantage in shots despite playing into the wind. Slippery Rock had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

The lead could have well been 2-0 if not for a spectacular save by Voelker. The sophomore made a diving stop to her right of a penalty kick by Rachel Edge, the PSAC West Athlete of the Year, six minutes into the match.

Edinboro's best looks came on a pair of shots by Danielle Chatten, with  SRU goalkeeper Emma Yoder going to the ground to make a save 24 minutes into the match. The senior would then hit the crossbar on a shot in the 32nd minute.

The Fighting Scots were unable to mount much of an attack throughout the second half until the 72nd minute. Chatten scored her 12th goal of the season as she stared down a defender, then fired away from 25 yards out into the left corner of the net past Yoder to knot the score at 1-1 at 71:59.

Less than three minutes later, Slippery Rock regained the lead at 2-1 off a free kick by. Georgia Nagucki. Her kick from the 27-yard line in front of the goal soared to Kayla Swope, who headed the ball into the left corner of the net at 74:46.

Edinboro would have an excellent opportunity for the equalizer in the 79th minute with a penalty kick as Chatten was knocked down in the box. Sidney Dobbins attempted the penalty kick, with her attempt to the right side smothered by Yoder.

The Fighting Scots would have one last opportunity on a shot by Chatten with two minutes. The senior was unable to get a lot on the shot, but Yoder did not field it cleanly. It bounced off Yoder, but no Scot was in the area to follow up.

Edinboro ended with a 16-11 advantage in shots, but Slippery Rock held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Voelker and Yoder were both outstanding in goal. Both were accorded second team All-PSAC West honors earlier in the week. Voelker made seven saves, while Yoder finished with five. Yoder would be named the tournament MVP.

Chatten's goal was her 12th of the season, which is tied for fifth in a season. She now has 29 points, which is tied for seventh. For her career, the senior forward now has 29 career goals and 73 career points. She ranks ninth in both categories.

Edinboro must now await word on a potential NCAA Tournament berth. The Fighting Scots were ranked eighth in the latest Atlantic Region rankings, with six teams qualifying. West Chester came into the week ranked sixth, but Edinboro's 1-0 win over the Golden Rams in the PSAC Semifinals could vault the Fighting Scots into the sixth spot. Fairmont State was seventh in the region and reached the Mountain East Conference finals before losing to Concord, 2-0. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday at 6 p.m.
