Seniors, Freshmen Combine for 27-20 Win over Clarion on Senior Day

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Edinboro 27, Clarion 20
  • Records:  Edinboro (3-6, 3-3 PSAC West), Clarion (3-6, 1-5 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Sox Harrison Stadium
  • The Short Story:  Edinboro sent out its seniors in style on Senior Day with a 27-20 win over Clarion to make it two wins in a row. The Fighting Scots had to withstand a rally by the Golden Eagles, coming up with a big defensive stand after Clarion closed a 27-10 deficit to 27-20. The day featured a number of seniors playing huge roles, along with big efforts from a pair of freshmen.  Ta'Nauz Gregory continued to rewrite the Edinboro record book, as he hauled in a record-tying three touchdown passes from Levi Becker, covering 1, 36, and 53 yards. The senior wide receiver came in holding school records for career receptions and career kickoff return yards, and on Saturday broke the record for career receiving yards, now at 3,119 yards, along with tying the career record for touchdowns receiving with 35. Edinboro's other points came on field goals of 28 and 21 yards by redshirt freshmen Vicente Arriagada. He has now made 10 straight field goal attempts. Freshman running back CJ Reyes-Diggs led a season-high 215-yard rushing effort as he finished with a season-high 178 yards on 35 carries. The latter figure is tied for 11th in a game. Edinboro improved to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro would grab a 10-0 lead after one quarter and build that lead to 17-3 at the half. The Fighting Scots drove into Clarion territory on their opening drive only to suffer a turnover on a Levi Becker interception.
  • After a three-and-out, the Fighting Scots put together the longest drive of the year in terms of time, 6 minutes, 41 seconds, covering 81 yards on 13 plays. Edinboro converted twice on fourth down, including a 16-yard pass from Becker to Kahlil Jackson on a 4th-and-3 that carried to the CU 10. Then on 4th-and-goal from the one, Becker lofted a perfect fade pass to a leaping Ta'Nauz Gregory in the right corner of the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 3:35 left in the quarter.
  • Edinboro was back in scoring territory moments later after Maurice Sims stripped Quinn Zinobile of the ball and Myles Turner recovered at the Clarion 31. Despite a 26-yard run by CJ Reyes-Diggs, the longest run by a Fighting Scot this year, Edinboro was forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Vicente Arriagada. That made the lead 10-0 with 1:34 left in the opening quarter.
  • Clarion would get on the board on the next possession, as backup quarterback Michael Proios engineered an 11-play, 58-yard drive. The Golden Eagles advanced as far as the EU 5 yard-line before James Metzgar came in and booted a 27-yard field goal. That made it 10-3 with 11:06 left in the second quarter.
  • An interception by one of 10 seniors recognized before the game not only stopped a Clarion drive but gave the Fighting Scots another scoring threat. Aaron Rogers intercepted a pass for the second straight week and returned it 17 yards to the EU 49. Facing a 4th-and-5 at the Clarion 36 six plays later, Becker and Gregory combined for their second touchdown of the afternoon, and broke a record in the process. The 36-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds left in the half gave Edinboro a 17-3 lead. It also gave Gregory the career receiving yards record, as he moved past Ernest Priester.
  • Edinboro would build the lead to 20-3 on its first possession of the third quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Arriagada. The 9-play, 49-yard drive opened with runs of 15 and 18 yards by Reyes-Diggs, who ran for 100 yards in the first half alone.
  • After an exchange of punts, Clarion began its comeback. The Golden Eagles needed just four plays to cover 44 yards following a short punt. A 27-yard hookup from Proios to Zinobile gave the Golden Eagles the ball at the five, and on the next play Mylique McGriff went around left end for the touchdown. That closed the gap to 20-10 with 2:13 left in the third quarter.
  • The Fighting Scots needed just two plays to negate the score. After a short run by Reyes-Diggs, Becker found Gregory behind the Clarion secondary for a 53-yard scoring play, their third TD connection of the day and Gregory's 35th of his career, tying the school record. That made it 27-10 with 1:32 left in the quarter.
  • Clarion would do all the scoring in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles marched 62 yards on 11 plays, with McGriff doing much of the damage. He carried the final three plays for 25 yards, scoring on a seven-yard run with 13:27 left in the game. That made it 27-17.
  • An Edinboro turnover two plays later gave Clarion the ball back at the EU 33. They would drive down to the six, but Ryan Bischof came up with back-to-back big plays on defense. He held McGriff to no gain on second and goal, then sacked Proios for a seven-yard loss on third down. Metzgar came in and made a 30-yard field goal as Clarion was now within one score at 27-20 with 10:05 still remaining.
  • The Edinboro offense would manage just one first down the rest of the way, but the defense would step up. Clarion drove into Edinboro territory at the EU 46, but on the next play senior Marquese Moore intercepted a pass.
  • After a three-and-out, Clarion took over at its own 31 with 1:56 remaining. The Golden Eagles would move to their own 43, but the final three plays were passes broken up by Saige Ley, Moore, and Joshua Boyd.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Edinboro enjoyed a season-best day on offense, finishing with 392 total yards and 215 yards rushing. In fact, Edinboro came into the game with 499 yards rushing in eight games. The defense, meanwhile, limited Clarion to 271 total yards, the second straight game under 280 yards. Both teams turned the ball over three times.
  • CJ Reyes-Diggs led the season-best rushing effort. When leading rusher Dorian Woody went down with an injury five plays into the game, Reyes-Diggs was forced to be the workhorse. He came into the game with 103 yards on 42 carries, but ended the day with 178 yards on 35 carries. The 35 carries is tied for the 11th-highest total in a game.
  • Levi Becker, who came into the season as the third string quarterback, made his third straight start. The redshirt sophomore was once again very efficient, completing 9-of-18 passes for 177 yards with an interception and 3 TDs. He added 28 yards rushing.
  • Kahlil Jackson and Ta'Nauz Gregory were the only Fighting Scots to catch passes. Jackson set career-highs with 5 receptions for 88 yards, while Gregory caught 4 passes for 89 yards, with three going for six points. The senior wide receiver also returned three kickoffs for 86 yards.
  • The defense once again came up big, forcing three turnovers, recording four sacks, and holding Clarion to 5-of-16 on third down conversions. Ryan Bischof, who missed last week's game with an injury, returned to total 11 tackles, including a sack. Freshman linebacker Saige Ley added 9 tackles. Seniors in the secondary included Marquese Moore (7 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TFL), Brandon Anderson (7 tackles), and Aaron Rogers (6 tackles, 1 INT).
