Arriagada Ties School Record for Season Field Goals as Fighting Scots Put Scare into #19 IUP

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  #19 Indiana(Pa.) 35, Edinboro 6
  • Records:  Edinboro (3-6, 3-3 PSAC West), IUP (8-1, 5-1 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Sox Harrison Stadium
  • The Short Story:  19, 4, 3, and 1. Those were the key numbers for Edinboro on Saturday. The 19 represents Indiana(Pa.)'s ranking in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25. Four is the number of long pass plays IUP hit on Saturday, three leading to a score and one directly accounting for six points. Three is the number of interceptions on Saturday. And one was the one long punt return that set up the other touchdown for the Crimson Hawks. It all added up for a 35-6 win for IUP on Senior Day, as the Crimson Hawks won their sixth straight game vs. Edinboro. It would be easy to say that the lone bright spot for Edinboro was the two field goals by redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada, covering 30 and 31 yards. But that wouldn't be fair to the effort turned in by the Fighting Scots on a sunny but cold day. An Edinboro team beset by injuries trailed just 14-6 midway through the third quarter before they were finally worn down by IUP's big plays. In fact, for most of the second half Edinboro was playing with a third string quarterback handing off to a third string tailback with two starting offensive linemen out. Edinboro held the Crimosn Hawks to 0 yards rushing. Zero! And an Edinboro team that ranked among the least productive rushing in Division II gained 112 yards on the ground.  The Fighting Scots were barely outgained in the game, 277 yards to 258. But the big plays led to three Quinton Maxwell touchdown passes, along with a pair of shirt touchdown runs.  Edinboro improved to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Edinboro took its lone lead of the game at 3-0 on a 30-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada. The three-pointer capped a 10-play, 74-yard drive  The march was keyed by three straight completions from Levi Becker to Kahlil Jackson II for 54 yards, the last covering 37 yards to the IUP 20. The Fighting Scots reached the 13 before Arriagada was called on with 10:24 left in the second quarter.
  • IUP responded with an 8-play, 60-yard march that was set up by a 37-yard kickoff return by Nazir Streater. On 3rd-and-10, Quinton Maxwell completed a 34-yard pass to JoJo Gause to the EU4.  Maxwell found Dom McNeil for a seven-yard score and a 7-3 lead with 6:51 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Crimson Hawks scored on their next possession, as well, following a three-and-out and a short punt by Edinboro. This time Maxwell found Duane Brown for a gain of 36 yards to the EU 4. Three plays later Brown scored on a two-yard run to cap the 3-play, 40-yard drive and give IUP a 14-3 lead with 4:27 remaining in the half.
  • The teams exchanged turnovers to start the third quarter, with Becker throwing an interception but Joshua Boyd forced a fumble that was receovered by Brandon Anderson at the IUP 37. On the first play, Becker and Ta'Nauz Gregory combined on an 18-yard completion. It would lead to Arriagada's second field goal of the game, this one from 31 yards out with 11:28 left in the third quarter.
  • The Edinboro score made it 14-6, but IUP would go on to score three more times while holding Edinboro scoreless the rest of the way. Brown put IUP in position to score with a 57-yard punt return to the EU 8. A pass interference call moved the ball to the two, and three plays later Maxwell combined with Gause for a four-yard touchdown pass and a 21-6 lead with 7:44 left in the quarter.
  • The Crimson Hawks entered the fourth quarter leading 21-3, and would tack on two insurance scores in the final 15 minutes. The first came on the second play of the quarter, and was the third of four big passes from Maxwell. This covered 47 yards to Gause and went for six points. It capped a 3-play, 59-yard drive.
  • Following a three-and-out by Edinboro, IUP drove 65 yards ion 7 plays, most of that yardage coming on a 50-yard pass to Brown. The play carried to the one, and on second-and-goal Justice Evans dove into the end zone. That made it 35-6 with 10:48 remaining.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Statistically speaking, the game was very even. IUP would outgain Edinboro by 277 yards to 258. All of IUP's yardage came through the air, as the Crimson Hawks finished with zero yards on 29 attempts. Edinboro would finish with 112 yards rushing against a stout IUP rush defense. The Crimson Hawks held a big advantage through the air, throwing for 377 yards compared to 146 for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro held a 16-13 edge in first downs, and sacked IUP quarterbacks three times while allowing just one sack against one of the top teams in Division II in sacks.
  • Edinboro began the day featuring CJ Reyes-Diggs in the ground game. The freshman got off to a fast but would go out with an injury, finishing the day with 52 yards on 17 carries. Leading rusher Dorian Woody came in at less than 100 percent and carried just once for six yards. That left little-used senior Alvin Lara to finish up the game. He would rush for a game-high 58 yards on 17 carries, both career highs.
  • Levi Becker completed 13-of-35 passes for 1446 yards with 3 INTs. His favorite target, as usual, was Ta'Nauz Gregory with 5 catches for 49 yards. Kahlil Jackson II added 3 catches for 54 yards, and Andre Dowdell had 3 for 27 yards.

JoJo Gause caught 7 passes for 117 yards and 2 TDs, while Duane Brown caught 4 passes for 98 yards.and also had two [punt returns for 70 yards. Samir Bullock was the leading rusher with 27 yards on 9 carries.
RECORD BOOK
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory added to his records as the senior wide receiver caught 5 passes for 49 yards. He now has 228 career receptions for 3,168 yards, both school records. He is tied for the career lead in receiving TDs (35), and boosted his kickoff return yards record to 2,146. Finally, Gregory now has 5,703 career all-purpose yards, good for second all-time. Larry Jackson holds the record with 6,095 yards.
  • Vicente Arriagada continued to excel as Edinboro's placekicker, and on Saturday he tied the season record for field goals in a season. The redshirt freshman would see his string of 10 straight field goals come to an end in the first quarter, as he came up short on a 46-yard attempt into the wind. But he would convert from 30 and 31 yards and has now made at least two field goals in five of the last six games. Arriagada's second field goal tied the season record of 15 set by Rich Ruskiewicz in 1982. He has made good on 15-of-18 attempts.
  • Redshirt senior strong safety Brandon Anderson moved into the top ten in career tackles a week ago, and he moved into ninth place on Saturday after totaling 7 tackles. He now has 341 career stops. Anderson has a team-leading 88 tackles and is looking to lead Edinboro in tackles for the third straight year. That has not been done since 1998.
