Barnes Drops in 26 Points but Edinboro Drops 79-68 Decision at East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.Michaela Barnes led four players in double figures with 26 points, but East Stroudsburg used a strong-shooting second half to hand the visiting Fighting Scots a 79-68 defeat on Friday night. Edinboro is now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC West, while East Stroudsburg is 6-4 and 2-2 in the PSAC East. Edinboro had won the previous 17 meetings with the Warriors.

The two battled on even terms throughout the first half, with the score tied at 28-28 at intermission. Edinboro held a 28-22 lead late in the second quarter following a Bella Burrelli rebound basket, but the Warriors scored the final six points of the half.  They would take their first lead of the night with the first four points of the third quarter to complete a string of ten straight points.

The third quarter would be back and forth, with nine lead changes and a tie. ESU's Sadie Cresswell would hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left for a 54-51 lead after three quarters.

The fourth quarter started out similar to the third, with a Bridgette Shaffer three tying the game at 56-56. After an ESU basket and a pair of free throws by Barnes, the Warriors proceeded to go on a 13-2 run. Jordan Hetz and Tiffany Lapotsky accounted for all 13 points, with Hertz contributing eight and Lapotski five. Hertz would start the run with a layup, and ended it with a pair of free throws.

That made it 71-60 with 4:14 remaining. Edinboro ended the run on a Rana Elhusseini jumper from the foul line with 4:00 remaining.  The freshman would follow with another basket to cut the deficit to 71-64, but Edinboro would pull no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Edinboro ended the game shooting 45.0 percent (27-of-60), making 6-of-16 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots would miss their first six free throw attempts and ended the night at 8-of-18. East Stroudsburg shot 54.5 percent for the game (30-of-55), including a sizzling 69.2 percent (18-of-26) in the second half. The Warriors were 7-of-17 on 3-pointers and made 12-of-14 free throws.

ESU held a slight edge on the glass at 32-30, and both teams committed 14 turnovers. The contest featured 13 lead changes and a pair of ties.

Barnes made 10-of-20 field goals, including 1-of-3 free throws, and was 5-of-7 at the line to finish with 26 points. A year ago she scored a school-record 42 points vs. the Warriors. The senior guard moved up to seventh in career scoring with 1,468 points. She also had a team-leading seven rebounds.

Elhuesseini added 14 points, with five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Shaffer went 3-of-6 on 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Burrelli came off the bench to contribute 11 points and five rebounds.

ESU also had four players in double figures, with Lapotsky leading the way with 23 points. Julia Kutz had 12 points and Hetz and Abby Schoffstall finished with 10 points apiece.

Edinboro will play its final game in 2019 on Saturday night at Kutztown. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
