Edinboro Wins Two of Three Duals at Mountaineer Quad Behind Varndell, Oliver

MORGANTOWN, WV – The Edinboro wrestling team picked up wins in two of its three matches at the Mountaineer Quad on Sunday afternoon at the West Virginia Coliseum. The Fighting Scots opened with a 26-12 victory over Hofstra, then disposed of VMI, 32-6. They would suffer a 22-9 loss to West Virginia to wrap up the day. The Fighting Scots conclude the 2019 portion of their season with a 7-3 record.

Tye Varndell and Jacob Oliver were three-time winners. After not being able to wrestle in Friday's dual against George Mason, Varndell, a true freshman, won three decisions at 133 lbs. to improve to 12-5 on the season. Oliver won three times at 174 lbs., although one was a forfeit win vs. Hofstra. After winning by decision vs. VMI, he rallied late for a 16-12 decision vs. West Virginia to boost his record to 13-4.
Six other wrestlers won twice – Nate Hagan (141 lbs.), Tyler Vath (149 lbs.), Peter Pappas (157 lbs.), Derek Ciavarro (165 lbs.), Cody Mulligan (184 lbs.), and Jon Spaulding (hwt.). Vath won twice by technical fall.

The day had a special Edinboro flavor to it. Edinboro head coach Matt Hill and VMI head coach Jim Gibson were teammates and wrestled for Tim Flynn, who left Edinboro last year to take over at West Virginia. The WVU staff also includes former Boro assistants Cliff Moore and Mitchell Port, the latter one of the finest wrestlers ever at Edinboro. Gibson's staff includes former Fighting Scot Ty Schoffstall.

In addition, Shane Noonan took home sixth place while competing at the Wilkes Open at heavyweight. The freshman went 3-2, with a fall, a technical fall, and a major decision.

Edinboro will return to action on Sunday, January 5 hosting Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference dual, along with a meeting with Gannon.

Here's a recap of the three matches.

EDINBORO 26, HOFSTRA 12
The Pride jumped out to a 9-3 lead, winning by fall at 125 lbs. and decision at 141 lbs. Varndell, meanwhile, won a 5-3 decision over Garrett Lambert  at 133 lbs. The rest of the match was all Edinboro, winning six of the final seven bouts. That included a technical fall at 149 lbs. by Vath over Charlie Kane, 17-0 in the second period, beginning a string of five straight wins that gave the Fighting Scots a 23-9 advantage. Redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan capped the run with s takedown with two seconds left in sudden victory for a 5-3 decision at 184 lbs. over Charles Small.

EDINBORO 32, VMI 6
The Keydets would jump out to a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125 lbs. The Fighting Scots proceeded to win the last nine bouts, ending with a fall at 1:46 for Jon Spaulding at heavyweight over Robbie Adelstein. Vath claimed his second technical fall of the day, 16-0 at 3:33 over Job Chisko. Varndell won a 5-4 decision at 133 lbs. over Cliff Conway. Oliver picked up his second win with a 13-9 decision at 174 lbs. over Neil Richards.

WEST VIRGINIA 22, EDINBORO 9
The first meeting between teacher and pupil would go to Flynn, as his Mountaineers fell behind early but won six of the final seven bouts. WVU took a 4-0 lead with a major decision at 125 lbs. Varndell's 7-2 decision over Lucas Seibert at 133 lbs., followed by an 8-4 decision by Nate Hagan over Caleb Rea at 141 lbs. – thanks to a late takedown and back points – gave Edinboro a 6-4 lead. That advantage was short-lived, as WVU won the next three matches by decision. Oliver would halt the string with a wild 16-12 decision over Scott Joll at 174 lbs. Oliver trailed 10-7 after one period, and that was still the score after two periods. That pulled the Fighting Scots within 13-9, but the Fighting Scots would lose the final three matches, two by a point.
