ERIE, Pa. – For the first time since reinstatement for the 2010-11 season, the Edinboro men's tennis team beat an NCAA Div. I opponent as the Fighting Scots beat Niagara, 6-1, on Sunday morning. Edinboro remains undefeated at 2-0 on the season with the Purple Eagles falling to 0-4. The match took place on the indoor courts at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.
The Fighting Scots got things started in doubles sweeping all three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Tommy Hsu and
Nils Plutat finished quickly with a 6-2 win over Lukas Wenninger and Finnbar Adams.
Mateus Santos and
Mauricio Santos followed suit with a 6-4 win over Bruno Goncalves and Pere Padro. After playing the fall together,
Kevin Mboko and
Julius Schulte completed the sweep with a 6-3 win at number one doubles.
In singles,
Mauricio Santos made quick work of Padro in a 6-0, 6-0 win to put the Fighting Scots up 2-0. About 25 minutes later,
Tommy Hsu put Edinboro within one win of the win with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Adams.
After being down 5-1 in the first set, Plutat won nine straight games and clinched the win for the Fighting Scots 7-5, 6-1.
At the top singles spot,
Mateus Santos was the fourth Fighting Scot to win in straight sets with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Darrel Harxhi. Mboko dropped the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (3) to Wenninger, but came back to even the match with a 6-4 second set win. As the match had been clinched, a match tiebreak was played in lieu of a third set. The match tiebreak was tied up at 6-6 before Mboko won the next four points to pick up the win.
Edinboro returns to the court Friday, February 15 as they take on Daemen. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. inside the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.
