Edinboro Suffers 18-15 Loss to Clarion to Conclude Dual Season

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro wrapped upper its first season of dual meet action under head coach Matt Hill with an 18-15 loss to Clarion on Friday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The loss dropped a rebuilding Edinboro team to 2-9 on the season and 1-5 in the EWL. Clarion is 7-6 and 4-2, respectively.
 
The Fighting Scots had won six straight duals against the Golden Eagles, and 19 of the last 20. Clarion would end that streak thanks to Seth Koleno's (13-11) fall at 133 lbs. over Richie Gomez (11-23) at 5:24. Gomez actually held a 9-5 lead after one period, and still remained ahead 10-9 after two periods before Koleno turned Gomez for four points early in the third period before winning by fall.
  
Edinboro won two of the first three matches as the teams were tied at 6-6 after 141 lbs. Lucas Rodriguez used a late first period rush to capture an 8-2 decision over Gavin Park (2-12) at 125 lbs. Rodriguez registered a takedown with 10 seconds left in the first period, and added four near fall points at the buzzer for a 6-0 lead.
 
Carmen Ciotti gave up a late first period takedown to Andrew Gapas at 141 lbs., and still trailed 2-0 after two periods. The junior opened the third period with an escape, followed by a takedown and four near fall points with 20 seconds remaining to blow open the match and win an 8-2 decision. Ciotti improved to 18-14.
 
Clarion surged ahead 15-6 thanks to wins in the next three bouts. At 149 lbs., Avery Shay (9-4) won a 5-1 decision over Tyler Vath (2-5). Mike Bartolo (6-6) followed with a 9-4 decision over Matthew Dowler (1-9) at 157 lbs.
 
Fritz Hoehn and Evan Delong battled at 165 lbs., with Hoehn taking a 4-3 lead with a takedown with 45 seconds remaining, but Delong scoring the winning points on a reversal with 11 seconds left for a 5-4 decision. Hoehn is now 8-9, while Delong moved to 14-11.
 
Jacob Oliver, who improved to 26-4, won his seventh straight match at 174 lbs., as the redshirt freshman posted an 8-4 decision over Max Wohlabaugh (14-8). The two were tied at 3-3 after one period. Oliver opened the second with an escape, and gained a penalty point on locked hands for a 5-3 lead. A Wohlabaugh escape made it 5-4 early in the third period, but Oliver registered his second takedown less than 30 seconds into the period for a 7-4 lead. He owned 1:13 in riding time.

Zach Ancewicz pulled the Fighting Scots to within 15-12 with a 5-2 decision at 184 lbs. over Ty Bagoly. The sophomore led 2-0 after one period, with Bagoly's escape the lone point in the second period. Ancewicz opened the third period with an escape, and built the lead to 5-1 with a takedown with 50 seconds remaining. He improved to 16-14 while Bagoly fell to 13-10.
 
Dylan Reynolds battled 17th-ranked Greg Bulsak at 197 lbs. Following a scoreless first period, Bulsak took a 1-0 lead into the third period, and then recorded the lone takedown of the match at 1:27. He would add a point for riding time. Reynolds is now 29-11, while Bulsak improved to 16-4.
 
Jon Spaulding (19-13) wrapped up the match with a 10-6 decision over Toby Cahill (8-12) at heavyweight. The sophomore wore Cahill down, leading 2-1 after one period and 5-2 after two periods thanks to a pair of takedowns. He extended the lead to 10-3 with two more takedowns in the final period before a late escape and takedown for Cahill.
 
Edinboro will now prepare for the upcoming EWL Championships, set for Saturday, March 9 in Fairfax, Va. George Mason is hosting the championship.
