Staunch Has Big Day in Season-Ending Loss at Mercyhurst

  • The Short Story:  Edinboro concluded the 2018-19 season with its second straight game against one of the top teams in the region. The Fighting Scots played second-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday, and saw Mercyhurst win its 20th game on Saturday a blistering shooting display from long distance. The Lakers made 13-of-26 3-pointers, finally pulling away from Edinboro midway through the second half. Trey Staunch kept Edinboro within striking distance in the first half with 15 of his game-game 21 points in the first half. Mercyhurst led 38-29 at the half. Edinboro would not make a basket for the first five minutes of the second half, while the Lakers opened the half with three 3-pointers.  
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trey Staunch kept the Fighting Scots in the game in the early going, scoring 11 of Edinboro's first 16 points. He muscled his way to three 3-point plays. The Fighting Scots were behind 24-16 midway through the half.
  • Mercyhurst built the lead to 13 points on several occasions in the half, the last at 36-23 with 1:28 remaining. Jaryn Simpson's two free throws and a lineup by Steven Freeman closed the gap to 38-29 at the half.
  • After scoring the final four points of the half, Edinboro saw Mercyhurst come out and go on a 12-2 run to open the second half. The Lakers first three baskets of the half were 3-pointers, and they would go on to make eight 3-pointers in the half in 13 attempts. Mercyhurst led 50-31 with 14:25 left in the game.
  • Edinboro cut the deficit in half thanks to three straight 3-pointers by Freeman, part of a 13-4 run. That made it 54-44 with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Lakers responded with a 18-4 burst over the next four-and-a-half minutes to extend the lead to 72-48 with 8:30 left to play. The Fighting Scots never got closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Facing one of the top defensive teams in Division II, Edinboro ended the game at 32.8 percent from the floor (20-of-61), making 7-of-23 3-pointers, and going 15-of-16 at the line. Mercyhurst finished at 46.4 percent from the floor (32-of-69), and was better from beyond the arc at 13-of-26 on 3-pointers. The Lakers were 8-of-13 at the line.
  • Mercyhurst held a 44-37 advantage on the glass and committed 17 turnovers, compared to 15 turnovers for Edinboro. 
  • Trey Staunch capped a strong conclusion to the season with 21 points, making 7-of-12 field goals and going 7-for-7 at the line. The All-PSAC West offensive lineman also had nine rebounds. He ended his second season on the hardcourt with seven straight games in double figures and double-doubles in three of his last five games and five of his last eight. 
  • Jaryn Simpson added 16 points, making all six of his free throw attempts. The sophomore guard ended the season setting a school record for free throw percentage at 90.2 percent, making 110-of-122 free throws. In addition, he made 76 3-pointers, which ranks eighth in a season. Simpson finished the season scoring in double figures in 23 of 26 games.      
  • Steven Freeman came off the bench to contribute 15 points, making 3-of-6 3-pointers. The 5'11" junior added six rebounds.
  • Mercyhurst had four players in double digits, as ten different players scored. Nelson Maxwell had 18 points, making 4-of-5 3-pointers. Trystan Pratapas had 12 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, with Derrick Ellis and Jason Massey contributing 10 points apiece. Massey had nine rebounds and Ellis eight assists. Patrick Smith had a game-high 12 rebounds.
