CLERMONT, Fla. – A four-run sixth inning propelled the Edinboro softball team to a 5-3 win over Minnesota State Morehead on day three of the spring softball trip. The Fighting Scots improved to 2-2 while the Dragons fell to 2-11. The contest was played at Legends Way Field #1, as part of PFX's The Spring Games.
Edinboro never trailed in the contest, as
Heather Barrett's sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth inning drove
Abby Sallot home for a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Fighting Scots had four of their 10 hits, while also capitalizing on a Dragon error. That put Edinboro in position to lead the rest of the way.
With two outs in the inning,
Courtney Allen singled down the left field line. She scored off
Roni Lipinski's RBI-single. Barrett's RBI-double to third base pushed across
Lauren Gierlak, who pinch ran for Lipinski.
Jessica Little gave the Scots a 4-0 advantage on
Danna Heh's RBI-single. Barrett scored the final run in the frame on a throwing error by the catcher.
Minnesota State-Moorhead didn't go away easily, as the Dragon's tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ally Helgoe doubled down the right field line, which pushed two runner's home. The deficit then shortened to just two runs, as a fielding error helped the pinch runner reach home plate.
Carley Nasca improves to 2-0 with the win. She pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing the three runs but allowed just three hits.
Amanda Metz pitched the final inning to post her second save of the campaign. The senior struck out two of the final three batters faced. Heh and
Brittany Allen each went 2-for-4 on their at-bat's.
Edinboro plays a pair of contests on Tuesday, March 5 at Legends Way ballpark. The Fighting Scots are scheduled to take on U-Mary at 1:45 p.m., followed by St. Cloud State at 4:00 p.m.
