Fighting Scots Suffer Pair of Heartbreaking, One-Run Losses

CLERMONT, Ohio – After playing late into the night on Monday, the Edinboro softball team was back on the field early Tuesday morning for two more games. The Fighting Scots would suffer a pair of heartbreaking, one-run losses to fall to 2-6 on their spring trip. They get a much-needed day off on Thursday.
 
The day began with a 1-0 loss to Wilmington(Del.), as the Fighting Scots were limited to two hits, then suffered a 6-5 loss to Georgian Court on a walk-off, three-run homer.

The Fighting Scots were limited to two hits in their third straight low-scoring affair. Edinboro to 2-5 while losing its third straight game. The Wildcats, now 2-4, pushed across the lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Lauren Lopez opened the inning with a double down the right field line. Olivia Carbone pinch ran. Following a walk, an error loaded the bases. With two out, Carbone scored on a bases-loaded walk to Rosa'Lynn Burton. Makayla McCarthy made that run stand up, as she tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts. Amanda Metz (0-4) was the hard-luck loser for Edinboro, tossing the first four innings, allowing four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Carley Nasca came in to throw the final three innings, giving up just a hit with two strikeouts. Shannon Gilbert and Jessica Little accounted for Edinboro's hits with singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. The Fighting Scots were able to get a runner on second base just twice.
 
GEORGIAN COURT 6, EDINBORO 5
The bats came alive after totaling just four runs in the previous three games. Edinboro would break a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh, only to lose on a three-run walk-off homer with no outs in the bottom of the inning.  The Fighting Scots took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by Shannon Gilbert and a sacrifice fly by Victoria Allocco. Georgian Court (9-3) knotted the score at 2-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Edinboro took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Lions answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Lauren Gierlak accounted for Edinboro's runs with a two-run, two-out single.  Danna Heh opened the top of the seventh with a walk, and a Brittany Allen bunt single put runners on first and second. Allocco would give Edinboro a 6-4 lead with a two-run single.  The Lions opened the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles, and Samantha Reilly crushed a walk-off, three-run homer to right center for the game-winner. Edinboro ended with eight hits, with Allocco going 2-for-2 and driving three RBIs. Brittany Allen went 2-for-3. Carly Nasca started in the circle and went the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out five. Amanda Metz finished up, taking the loss in relief.
