Lipinski Powers Fighting Scots to Sweep of Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro picked up a pair of big PSAC West wins to continue pursuit of a spot in the postseason. The Fighting Scots moved to 15-15 overall and 6-6 in the PSAC West thanks to a sweep of visiting Mercyhurst. After winning 7-4 in the opener, Edinboro came back with an 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap. Mercyhurst is now 9-26 overall and 3-9 in league play.

The Fighting Scots have now won six of their last eight contests, and the 15-15 record is the best at this stage of the season since the 2015 team was 15-10-1.

Roni Lipinski paced the offensive attack with 4 hits in 7 at bats, while driving in 7 runs. Olivia Jankowski, meanwhile, had a hit in both games to extend her hitting streak to 21 games.

In the circle, Carley Nasca picked up a save in the first game and was the winner in game two.

Edinboro returns to action on Thursday, April 18, hosting Slippery Rock in a PSAC West twinbill. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Friday but rescheduled due to predicted poor weather conditions.

Game 1 – Edinboro 7, Mercyhurst 4
The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings to post their fifth win in the last seven games. They would pound out 10 hits and rode the solid pitching of Amanda Metz and Carley Nasca. Metz shut out the Lakers for four innings before surrendering four runs in the fifth as Mercyhurst closed to 6-4. Nasca came in and did not allow a hit over the last two innings for her first save. Metz struck out six while improving to 4-9 on the season. Edinboro struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning behind five hits. The first three batters reached

to load the bases, and Roni Lipinski drove in two runs with a single to right center. Victoria Allocco followed with a hard grounder to second for a single, driving in the third run. The Fighting Scots added a run in the second as Danna Heh tripled to left center and scored on Lauren Gierlak's fielder's choice, sliding underneath the tag at home. The lead grew to 6-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Abby Sallot walked and scored on Heh's second triple of the game, this one to right center. Heh then scored on an errant throw after she got into a rundown. Mercyhurst bunched together five hits in the fifth, including a three-run homer by Emma LeGendre, to close the gap to 6-4. The Scots answered with a run in the sixth on Gierlak's sacrifice fly. Heh was a perfect 3-for-3, while Jankowski boosted her hitting streak to 20 games with 2 hits in 3 at bats. Lipinski was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Game 2 – Edinboro 8, Mercyhurst 0 (5)
Edinboro went yard to put away the Lakers in game number two, belting three home runs. The Fighting Scots once again jumped out to big first-inning lead, and once again it was courtesy of Roni Lipinski. The senior catcher hit a grand slam to left field for a 4-0 lead, her first home run of the season. Danna Heh started the inning with an infield single, Lauren Gierlak reached on an error, and Olivia Jankowski loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch.  Edinboro added a run in the second inning when a double steal attempt resulted in an obstruction call at home plate.  The lead grew to 7-0 after four innings on Jankowski's seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left. It extended the senior's hitting streak to 21 games, and the seven home runs are tied for sixth in a season. She now has 34 RBIs, which is tied for second in a season. Lipinski would add her second home run of the game to open up the fifth inning and invoke the eight-run rule.  She would end game two going 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs. Jankowski drove in a pair of runs and also scored twice, while Gierlak crossed the plate twice, as well.  Carley Nasca and Amanda Metz combined to throw a two-hitter. Nasca improved to 11-6 with the win, with the 11 wins tied for tenth in a season. She pitched the first three innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two. Metz came in for the last innings, walking one and striking out one.
