EDINBORO, Pa. - For the second straight year, the Edinboro softball team overcame a multi-run deficit to beat Slippery Rock in game one, en route to a season sweep of the Rock.
After scoring eight runs in the seventh in game one of last season's home doubleheader with the Rock, The Fighting Scots rallied from a 9-3 deficit to best SRU in game one, 10-9 in eight innings. They then scored five runs in the sixth of game two for a 5-0 shutout.
With the pair of wins, the Fighting Scots improve to 17-15 overall and 8-6 in the PSAC West. The Rock fall to 16-23 overall and 6-8 in the Western Division.
Edinboro currently sits in third place in the PSAC West standings, with a two-game lead over Cal U and a four-game lead over Slippery Rock. The two wins against the Rock on Thursday give the Fighting Scots the season sweep, 4-0.
The Fighting Scots matchup up with the Cal U in a crucial PSAC West doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. The doubleheader count towards the Fighting Scots road record, as the Vulcans will serve as the home team.
In the first matchup of the season, the two teams split the twinbill, as Edinboro won game one, 8-7, before Cal U took game two, 9-7.
Game 1: Edinboro 10, Slippery Rock 9 (8 innings)
Strong winds did not favor Edinboro in the first inning, as Slippery Rock jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. But Edinboro would come to within two runs through four innings, scoring twice in the third and once in the fourth.
Slippery Rock would answer with a four-run sixth. However, the Fighting Scots didn't let that phase them, as they scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Shannon Gilbert got Edinboro off to a strong start in the inning with a double to left center.
Jessica Little's singled on the next play put runners at the corners.
Abby Sallot then hit a double, pushing both Gilbert and Little home. After Sallot reached third on
Danna Heh's at-bat,
Lauren Gierlak drove her home with an RBI-double down the left field line.
Jankowski was then hit by a pitch, once again pinning runners at first and third.
Brittany Allen reached on an error, which also pushed Gierlak home.
After a scoreless seventh by Slippery Rock, Gilbert once again was the first batter up for Edinboro. On a 2-1 count, she drilled a solo shot to left field and cut the deficit to one run at 9-8. Little then doubled to right center.
Courtney Allen would enter as a pinch runner for Little. Sallot's sacrifice bunt advanced Allen to third. With two outs, Gierlak's single scored Allen and knotted the game at 9-9.
In the 10th. With one out, Lipinski repeated her performance from game two of the Mercyhurst series on Wednesday. She hit a walk-off home run to left field. Not only was it her second consecutive walk-off dinger in as many games, but it also marked her third home run in two contests.
Edinboro finished with 14 hits to Slippery Rock's 10. The Rock would be limited to just six hits over the final seven innings.
Six Fighting Scots had multiple hits in the win. Jankowski went 3-of-4 with one run, as she hit her eighth home run of the season and had two RBI. Gierlak went 2-of-4 for one run with a double and two RBI. Gilbert went 2-of-2, scoring twice, as she hit a double and a home run, while also drive in one. Sallot went 2-of-2, scoring twice with a double and two RBI. Little went 2-of-4 with a double and scoring once. Lipinski went 2-of-5, tallying two runs with a double and driving one Fighting Scot home. C. Allen scored once and
Victoria Allocco hit a double and had an RBI.
Carley Nasca captured the win, improving to 12-6 on the season. She allowed two runs, with zero earned on three hits, while striking out three and walking one in 2 1/3 innings.
Amanda Metz started the game and battled through the nasty weather. In 5 2/3 innings, she allowed seven runs, but just four were earned on seven hits. She fanned four and walked two.
Game 2: Edinboro 5, Slippery Rock 0
Both teams got off to a slow start, but a five-run with inning lifted Edinboro to its fourth consecutive win.
Olivia Jankowski extended her hitting streak to 23 games. She went yard for the ninth time this season, putting Edinboro on top, 1-0. Her nine home runs are the second-most in a season by a Fighting Scot. She has now hit a home run in three straight contests.
Shannon Gilbert then singled down the left field line and advanced to second on
Roni Lipinski's single.
Brittany Allen's RBI-single scored Gilbert.
Jessica Little hit a double to left center, which pushed across both Lipinski and Allen. Little scored the final run of the game.
Carley Nasca went the distance for the Fighting Scots, as she pitched all seven innings. She allowed three hits and struck out two. With the win, she improves to 13-6 this season. Nasca's 13 wins this season are tied for seventh in a single campaign.
Edinboro finished with 10 hits, including five in the sixth inning alone. Gilbert went 3-of-3 with a run and
Danna Heh went 2-of-4. Little had two RBI, while Allen and Jankowski each had one.
