Fighting Scots Close in on PSAC Tournament Berth with Split vs. Cal U

EDINBORO, Pa. - EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro moved closer to its first PSAC Tournament berth since 2014, as the Fighting Scots split Wednesday's twinbill with Cal U, winning game one, 2-1, before a 4-2 loss in game two. The Fighting Scots improved to 18-16 overall and 9-7 in PSAC West action. The Vulcans fell to 11-21 and 7-9, respectively.

With Cal's field unplayable this season, their home doubleheader with the Fighting Scots was played at the Edinboro Softball Field.

Edinboro returns to action on Friday, April 26, as the Fighting Scots travel to Mercyhurst for a PSAC West doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.

GAME 1 – Edinboro 2, Cal U 1
Edinboro pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh and then held off the Vulcans in the bottom of the frame.  Danna Heh led off the inning with a single, and moved up to second on Lauren Gierlak's single. A groundout moved the two up a base. Shannon Gilbert was intentionally walked to load the bases. Roni Lipinski followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Heh. Brooke Wilson led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single, but Amanda Metz retired the next three batters. After four scoreless innings, Cal took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Sierra Besser-Paul. The Fighting Scots answered with a run in the top of the sixth as Lipinski continued her hot hitting. The senior catcher poked her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to center, to knot the score at 1-1. Lipinski led Edinboro's 11-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with both RBIs, while Heh and Victoria Allocco also went 2-for-4. Olivia Jankowski saw her 23-game hitting streak come to an end as she was held without a hit in four at bats. Carley Nasca was the starting pitcher and went the first five innings, allowing an unearned run on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Metz relieved in the sixth and gave up a hit and struck out two in two wins. The senior improved to 5-9 on the season.

GAME 2 - Cal U 4, Edinboro 2
Edinboro had a 10-4 advantage in hits, but two of Cal's four hits were home runs. That accounted for a 3-0 lead in favor of the Vulcans through four innings. The Vulcans would later capitalize on a fielding error in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. The Fighting Scots began a comeback bid over the final two innings, totaling half of their hits in the game. Olivia Jankowski started the sixth with a single through the left side. She then advanced to third on an error on Shannon Gilbert's at-bat, before Roni Lipinski's sacrifice fly pushed her home. In the seventh, Danna Heh hit a single through the left side. Then with two outs in the frame, Jankowski drilled a single to center, advancing Heh to second. The graduate student would score on Gilbert's RBI single. Edinboro's bid ended up short. Three Fighting Scots had multiple hits vs. Cal U, including Heh, who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Victoria Allocco went 2-of-3, while Jankowski was 2-for-4.
