Edinboro Splits with Division-Leading Gannon on Senior Day

EDINBORO, Pa. – Prior to Saturday's doubleheader against Gannon, Edinboro recognized 12 seniors playing in their final home game. That group of seniors then went out and split a doubleheader with PSAC West-leading Gannon to move even closer to a berth in the PSAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots won the first game, 5-2, before the Lady Knights came back with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.

Edinboro is now 19-17 overall and 10-8 in the PSAC West, while Gannon is 23-12 and 12-6, respectively. Weather permitting, the Fighting Scots are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Mercyhurst. Head coach Dan Gierlak's team will clinch their first postseason berth since 2014 with a sweep of the Lakers. They can also get in with a split and a loss by Cal U, who has a doubleheader at Seton Hill on Sunday. The Vulcans are 9-9 in league play.  Gannon and Seton Hill sit atop the division standings with 12-6 records and have clinched two of the three Western Division berths.

Prior to the game, Edinboro recognized five seniors for Gannon, along with 12 Fighting Scots. That group of seniors includes:  Brittany Allen, Courtney Allen, Heather Barrett, Cheyenne Bothun, Danna Heh, Olivia Jankowski, Roni Lipinski, Jessica Little, Emily Maziarz, Amanda Metz, Carley Nasca, and Abby Sallot.

GAME 1 – Edinboro 5, Gannon 2

Brittany and Courtney Allen (no relation) pounded home runs and Carley Nasca and Amanda Metz combined on a seven-hitter to move the Fighting Scots a step closer to a PSAC playoff berth. Nasca improved to 14-6 as she tossed the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, a pair of runs, with three walks and seven strikeouts. The 14 wins are tied for sixth in a season. Metz came in and got the final five outs while allowing just one hit and striking out three for her fifth save. Edinboro took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Olivia Jankowski and Roni Lipinski. Jankowski's single plated Danna Heh, who reached on an error, stole second and eventually came around to score on the single up the middle. Jankowski would later score on Lipinski's single to left field. The lead grew to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of Courtney Allen. With two outs, Jankowski singled up the middle and would round the bases on Allen's line drive home run over the right field fence, her second of the season. Gannon would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth on Kaitlyn Stocker's two-run homer, a majestic blast that was just fair down the left field line. Brittany Allen added an insurance run for the Fighting Scots as she poled her fourth home run down the right field line in the sixth inning. (NOTE: Every Edinboro player mentioned in this recap is a senior)

GAME 2 – Gannon 7, Edinboro 2

Just as in game one, Edinboro grabbed a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Fighting Scots bunched together three hits in the frame. Danna Heh led off with a single, and Cheyenne Bothun singled up the middle to send Heh to third. Olivia Jankowski brought Heh home with a sacrifice bunt, with Bothun moving up to second. Courtney Allen followed with an RBI single to center.  Amanda Metz struck out four of the first seven batters she faced, but Gannon would reach the senior for three runs in the top of the third. The final two runs came home on a single by Maria Taliani. While the Lady Knights would take a 3-2 lead, Madi Beining settled in and proceeded to retire ten straight batters after Allen's single. The string came to an end on Brittany Allen's single. Gannon would push four runs across in the top of the sixth inning, with three scoring on Sarah Ingerick's home run. Courtney Allen went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Jessica Little was 2-for-3 and Heh 2-for-4.
