Fighting Scots Sweep Mercyhurst to Clinch First PSAC Tournament Berth Since 2014

ERIE, Pa. – Edinboro wrapped up the regular season with a sweep at Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 9-0 in five innings, then coming back with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. With the wins the Fighting Scots clinched a berth in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. It marks Edinboro's first postseason appearance since 2014.

Edinboro improved to 21-17 overall and finished at 12-9 in Western Division play. The 21 wins are the most since the 2015 team won 23 games. Mercyhurst ended the year at 9-34 overall and 3-17 in the PSAC West.

The Fighting Scots finish as the third seed out of the Western Division and will meet the third seed out of the Eastern Division, Kutztown, on the opening day of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday, May 1 at Quakertown, Pa.

GAME 1 – Edinboro 9, Mercyhurst 0 (5 innings)

Carley Nasca allowed just a pair of singles for her 15th win and Edinboro scored in all but one inning as the Fighting Scots officially clinched the PSAC Tournament berth. Nasca improved to 15-6 while allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out one. The senior is now tied for fourth in wins in a season. Just one Laker reached second base. Edinboro, meanwhile, pounded out nine hits. Danna Heh went 3-for-4 and Lauren Gierlak was 2-for-3. Brittany Allen was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Roni Lipinksi also drove in two runs. Despite getting just one hit, the Fighting Scots opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. Lipinski drew a bases loaded walk and Allen drove in a run while reaching on an error. The lead grew to 6-0 after two innings as Shannon Gilbert plated a run in the second with a double, and Lipinski added another with a sacrifice. Allen added her second RBI on a single in the fourth. Edinboro reached the eight-run advantage in the fifth with a pair of runs. Lauren Gierlak drove in one with a single, and Olivia Jankowski plated Gierlak with a triple.

GAME 2 – Edinboro 5, Mercyhurst 3

The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 4-0 lead and rode the pitching of Amanda Metz to the sweep. Metz gave up seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts while tossing the complete game to improve to 6-11. She allowed just one earned run. Edinboro once again scored three runs in the first inning thanks to three hits and a pair of Mercyhurst errors. Danna Heh led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Olivia Jankowski. Brittany Allen then poked a two-out, two-run single. The lead grew to 4-0 in the top of the third on Shannon Gilbert's solo home run to left center to lead off the inning. Mercyhurst closed to 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Jankowski led off the top of the fifth inning with her tenth home run of the season for a 5-3 lead. Metz took over from there, as she the Lakers to just three singles the rest of the way. Heh and Gilbert finished with two hits apiece, while Allen and Jankowski drove in a pair of runs.
