EDINBORO, Pa. -- Four seniors were honored before the match as the Edinboro men's tennis team dropped a hotly contested match, 5-2, with Mercyhurst on Monday afternoon. Mercyhurst claimed the PSAC regular season title and top seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament next weekend, May 3-4. The loss snaps Edinboro's six-match winning streak and puts the Fighting Scots at 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC heading into the postseason. The Lakers improve to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC.
In doubles,
Mauricio Santos and
Nils Plutat made quick work of Felix Schmedding and Sebastian Pardo, 6-0. The Lakers picked up the 6-4 at the top doubles spot. At number two doubles,
Mateus Santos and
Tommy Hsu got things started off right leading 4-0. However, Ruairidh Fraser and Arseniy Sklyarov would only give up one game the rest of the match picking up the 7-5 for the Lakers and giving Mercyhurst the 1-0 heading into singles.
The Lakers started off singles with straight set wins at number five and one to jump ahead 3-0.
Julius Schulte got Edinboro on the board with his own straight set win at number six, 7-6 (2), 7-5. The remaining three matches all split sets. Unai Gonzalez clinched the match for the Lakers with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over
Mauricio Santos. Fraser added to the Mercyhurst lead with 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1 over Plutat. Hsu would give the Fighting Scots one more point with a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-6 (3) win over Pardo at number four.
Edinboro will be off until the PSAC Tournament. The Fighting Scots have earned the #2 seed and will face #3 Mercyhurst in the semifinals on May 3. #1 Mercyhurst will take on #4 Bloomsburg in the other semifinal. The winners will play for the PSAC title on Saturday, May 4 with the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on the line.
