Edinboro Sweeps Millersville, 4-0; Will Face Mercyhurst In PSAC Championship Match Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Edinboro men's tennis team defeated Millersville on Friday afternoon 4-0 to advance to the PSAC Championship match on Saturday. The Fighting Scots will renew their rivalry with Mercyhurst in the finals after the Lakers defeated Bloomsburg in the other semifinal, 4-0. Edinboro improved to 15-5 with the victory while Millersville finishes the season, 8-14.

Edinboro jumped on the board early winning the doubles point with wins at number two and three doubles. Mateus Santos and Tommy Hsu won a tough 6-4 match against Frank Yanni and Rodrigo Lorencin at number two. But before that Mauricio Santos and Nils Plutat got things started with a 6-2 win over Pearson Cleary and Ben Fellman at number three. Kevin Mboko and Julius Schulte dropped a tight match at the top spot 6-4 to Peter Landis and Carlos Martinez-Lucas.

In singles, Schulte spotted the Fighting Scots a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Jose Alcazar at number six singles. Hsu followed up giving up only two games as well in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fellman at number four. Not to be outdone, Mauricio Santos clinched the match for Edinboro with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Landis at number two singles. The remaining matches went unfinished as play in the post season finishes when a team reaches four points.

With the win over the Marauders, the Fighting Scots have now reached the PSAC finals for the sixth straight year, and second straight under second-year head coach Kody Duncan. This marks the fifth straight year that Edinboro and Mercyhurst have met in the title match. The Fighting Scots prevailed in 2015 and 2016, with Mercyhurst winning in 2017 and a year ago by a score of 5-1. Edinboro also won the 2014 PSAC crown.

The Lakers posted a 5-2 win in the regular season match in late April. The Lakers are ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings, while Edinboro is third.
