Two-Match Winning Streak Snapped as Fighting Scots Fall to No. 23 Mercyhurst

The Short Story:  The Fighting Scots saw their two-match winning streak come to an against a Mercyhurst team that is tied for 23rd in the latest IWLCA Division II Top 25. The contest was also the final match this season, as Edinboro wraps up the 2019 campaign on Saturday, April 27 at Lock Haven. After Mercyhurst scored the first goal, Edinboro tied the match on a goal by Anna Leva. The Lakers ran off the next five goals for a 6-1 lead at the half. The Fighting Scots opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by Mary Uplinger, but Mercyhurst would score the next nine goals before Edinboro scored twice in the final five minutes.        .

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead on the first of three goals by Angelina Simon just over four minutes into the match. Anna Leva knotted the match with her 35th goal of the season just over a minute later.
  • Unfortunately, that would be the only goal of the half for the Fighting Scots, as Mercyhurst scored the next five goals for a 6-1 lead at intermission. The first three were by Julia Rescott and final two by Lacey Netti.
  • Mary Uplinger opened up the second half with a goal at the 25:33 mark, assisted by Sophie DePalma, as the Fighting Scots pulled to within 6-2.
  • The Lakers responded with nine straight goals to take a 15-2 lead, with seven different players scoring goals.
  • Edinboro would end the contest with a pair of goals. Stephanie Chido, in her final home match, registered her fifth goal with 4:46 remaining. Leva scored her second goal of the match and 36th of the season with 1:28 left, assisted by Uplinger.    
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mercyhurst finished with a 40-14 advantage in shots, and Edinboro committed 30 turnovers compared to 20 for the Lakers.
  • Anna Leva accounted for two of Edinboro's four goals, giving the redshirt freshman 36 for the season. That moves her up to seventh for goals in a season. Mary Uplinger had a goal and an assist, while Stephanie Chido accounted for Edinboro's other goal.
  • Mercyhurst had seven different players contribute goals, with Julia Rescott leading the way with four goals. Lacey Netti netted three goals and two assists, while Angelina Simon added three goals.
  • Candace McDole registered 17 saves for the Fighting Scots. It gives the sophomore 205 saves on the season, good for second in a season. She set the school season record a year ago with 222 saves.
