Edinboro Rallies for Dramatic Win in Game One to Earn Split with Cal U

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro played its home opener on a windy Wednesday afternoon against PSAC West foe Cal U, coming away with a split against the Vulcans. The Fighting Scots saw a big lead disappear, only to rally for an 8-7 win in the opener, before dropping a 9-7 decision in the nightcap. The Fighting Scots are now 9-11 overall and 2-2 in the Western Division, while Cal is 5-15 and 1-3, respectively.

Edinboro returns to action on Friday, April 5 at Slippery Rock with a doubleheader, before playing two more at Gannon the next day.

GAME 1 – Edinboro 8, Cal U 7
In a wild contest, the Fighting Scots entered the top of the seventh with a comfortable 6-0 lead, only to see Cal U push across seven runs to take a 7-6 lead. Edinboro would stage a rally of its own in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs for the dramatic win. Victoria Allocco opened the inning with a double off the glove of the centerfielder in deep left center. Jessica Little followed with a single to right to move Allocco to third. A sacrifice moved pinch runner Brooklyn Magill to second, and Lauren Gierlak walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Danna Heh came up with the game-winning hit as she drove a ball over the head of the leftfielder for a two-run double. Edinboro took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third, benefitting from a pair of Cal errors along with an RBI single by Gierlak. They added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI double by Little in the fifth, and Brittany Allen's home run leading off the sixth. It was her second of the season. Cal would come roaring back with seven runs in the top of the seventh on the strength of a pair of home runs among six hits. Heh led a 13-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, while Allocco had three hits in four at bats. Olivia Jankowski continued her hot hitting, going 2-for-3, as did Little. Carley Nasca started the game before being relieved in the sixth inning by Amanda Metz. Metz registered the final two outs of the frame, but after facing four batters in the seventh, Nasca came back in and ultimately picked up the win to improve to 8-4. She allowed three unearned runs in 6.1 innings, with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts.

GAME 2 – Cal U 9, Edinboro 7
In a game that featured 19 hits and seven errors, an Edinboro rally came up just short after the Fighting Scots fell behind 5-0 and later 9-3. Cal opened the game with five runs in the first inning, as Edinboro committed three errors to allow a pair of unearned runs, followed by a three-run homer by Janelle Allison. Edinboro answered with a run in the first as Danna Heh singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Olivia Jankowski. The Vulcans scored another unearned run in the top of the second, but the Fighting Scots came back with a pair on a double by Jessica Little, who eventually scored on an error. Both teams scored three runs in the third as Edinboro closed to 9-6. Brittany Allen plated a pair of runs on a double, and Roni Lipinski reached on an error, with a run scoring on the play. Edinboro's pitching would hold the Vulcans scoreless over the last four innings, but the Fighting Scots would score just a single run in the fourth. That came courtesy of a Jankowski single. Cal pitcher Taylor Robblee induced a double play to end the inning, and she proceeded to retire the final nine hitters she faced. Jankowski ended the game going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Allen also scored a pair. Allocco went 2-for-3 and Heh was 2-for 4. Amanda Metz (1-7) threw the first six innings, allowing four earned runs. Carley Nasca retired the side in order in the seventh.
