Edinboro Sweeps Slippery Rock in PSAC West Doubleheader

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Edinboro softball team improved to 7-3 on the road on Sunday, as the Fighting Scots swept Slippery Rock in a PSAC West doubleheader, winning 9-3 in game one, followed by 5-2 in the game two. The Fighting Scots improve to 11-13 overall and 4-4 in the Western Division, while The Rock falls to 12-17 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Edinboro will play their third doubleheader in four days on Tuesday, April 9, as the Fighting Scots travel to Ursuline for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Edinboro 9, Slippery Rock
Edinboro would pound out 16 hits while Carley Nasca limited The Rock to five hits. Danna Heh and Lauren Gierlak led off the game with singles, and Shannon Gilbert gave the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead with a single. The lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the third on RBI singles by Victoria Allocco and Brittany Allen. SRU would cut the margin to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the third, but Gilbert came back with an RBI single in the fourth to give Edinboro a 4-1 lead. SRU pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the gap to 4-3, but it was all Edinboro after that. Allen hit a solo home run to left in the fifth inning, and Gilbert and Allen keyed a four-run sixth inning with two-run doubles. Gilbert would enjoy a perfect 4-for-4 effort with 4 RBIs, while Allen also drove in four runs with 3 hits in 4 at-bats. Heh, Gierlak, and Olivia Jankowski added two hits apiece. Nasca tossed a five-hitter to improve to 9-6, finishing with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Game 2: Edinboro 5, Slippery Rock 2
Edinboro jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Olivia Jankowski's RBI sacrifice bunt scored Danna Heh in the first inning. Slippery Rock then tallied a run in the second and third innings, respectively, taking a 2-1 advantage. A pair of Edinboro runs in the fifth and sixth innings, propelled Edinboro's lead to 5-2. Cheyenne Bothun started the fifth by drilling a solo shot to left, followed by another Jankowski RBI that scored Lauren Gierlak from second. In the sixth, two Slippery Rock errors extended the inning. With only one out, Bothun reached on an error. During the play, Roni Lipinski was pushed home, but an off-target throw from second to the catcher allowed Brittany Allen to extend Edinboro's lead to 5-2. Edinboro out-hit Slippery Rock, 11-8.
