PEPPER PIKE, Ohio –
Olivia Jankowski hit a grand slam in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, as the Edinboro women's softball team swept Ursuline in a non-conference doubleheader, 7-6, 1-0.
The Fighting Scots improve to 13-13 overall, while the Arrows fall to 8-25. Edinboro is now on a four-game streak, which is their second longest of the season.
Edinboro begins a stretch of playing its next eight doubleheaders at home, starting on Friday in a PSAC West matchup against local rival Mercyhurst. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
Game 1: Edinboro 7, Ursuline 6
A six-run fifth inning, sparked by
Olivia Jankowski's grand slam propelled Edinboro to its third consecutive win. The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third when
Abby Sallot scored on Jankowski's RBI-double. Ursuline would go onto tie the game in the fourth. In the fifth,
Danna Heh,
Lauren Gierlak, and Sallot each singled to start the inning. Then with bases loaded, the reigning PSAC West Softball Athlete of the Week hit a grand slam to right field, propelling Edinboro to a 5-1 advantage. Later in the inning,
Shannon Gilbert scored from first due to an Arrow error. That followed by
Brittany Allen's RBI-single pushing
Victoria Allocco home for a 7-1 lead. The Arrows would make a late rally, scoring six runs in the seventh.
Carley Nasca improves to 10-5 on the season. She allowed two earned runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out five. Edinboro had 12 hits to nine for Ursuline. Sallot went 3-of-4 at the plate with twice scores, while Heh and Jankowski each had two hits and scored one. Jankowski finished with five RBI and Allen had one.
Game 2: Edinboro 1, Ursuline 0
Amanda Metz went the distance, improving to 3-8 on the season in a 1-0 shutout. The senior had a career day, finishing with a career-high eight strikeouts. She allowed no runs on seven hits and walked one. Edinboro scored its lone run of the contest in the second inning. With two outs, the Fighting Scots had bases loaded with
Danna Heh at first,
Cheyenne Bothun at second, and
Jessica Little at third. A wild pitch advanced each runner, with Little's run being the overall difference. In the fifth,
Olivia Jankowski tripled to center field. Her triple moves her into a five-way tie for 10th in career triples at Edinboro with six. The Scots had a 9-7 edge in hits, with
Brittany Allen and Little each going 2-for-3 on their at-bats.
